With 78 IBUs. Our version of a West Coast IPA- brewed in the San Diego style. This massively hoppy beer gets its flavor and attitude from no less than five hop varieties including Amarillo, Centennial, Cascade, Simcoe and Summit.

Bottle. Pours a orangey gold with a nice head that leaves a nice lacing pattern all the way down the glass. The nose is fruity, citric hops. Flavor is very resiny with bitterness throughout. The nose belies the hop barage on the palate. This was too bitter for me and I thought that the strength of that marred the other nuances that might be lying just below the surface of all those hops. I prefer more balance in an IPA although I understand the desire for hopped up, West Coast styles.

Sampled at the 5th Annual Boulder Strong Ale Fest. Beer is slightly cloudy, medium golden brown with a small, frothy, off-white, diminishing head.<P> The aroma is malty with moderate notes of toasted grain, caramel; Hoppy with heavy notes of resin/pine, grapefruit zest, light notes of apricot and orange; Yeasty with a trace note of clean, sweat dough.<P> The flavor is moderately sweet, moderately-to-heavily bitter with a long, moderately bittersweet, grippy finish.<P> The body is light, the texture is watery and the carbonation is lively.

Pours from the bomber a slightly hazy copper-orange color supporting a dense, thick bone white head. Paisley shaped wisps of foam endure throughout the glass with some spotty lacing patterns. A surprisingly well balanced aroma is noted for this west coast IPA. Smells of caramel, lightly toasted malts, apricot and bread dough blend admirably with the aleís hop aromas of pine needles, grapefruit and orange rind and flower pollen. Super smooth mouthfeel; slightly slick and creamy with a subtle tongue-tickling fizz. Flavor starts out slightly sweet presenting notes of Grape Nuts cereal, honey and caramel. This is quickly replaced by a very firm and muscular hop bitterness which replaces any and all remants of sweetness with flavors of citrus rind, pine sap, earth and freshly cut wood shavings. Finish is all about the hop resin bitterness which is clean, lip-smackingly crisp and long. What this west coast IPA may slightly lack in the big hoppy nose it certainly makes up with a superb flavor profile. Good stuff here!!

amber color. light smell of apricots with a slight taste of same. very smooth but i gotta say that i liked the high tide better

This is like drinking pot juice. And by pot, I mean the *wink wink* pot. So pungent and fresh tasting. As solid as a San Diego IPA can get. And now Iím seeing it in bottles within walking distance. Donít drink this before a pee test. Just kidding. Hops canít do that. Or can they???

Man, am I ever a sucker for an aggressive West Coast IPA. Then again, so are all of you. But seriously, this has got to be one of the real jewels, along with Pelican and Alesmith. First of all, a gigantic frothy head that sits and sits atop the copper body like it was an addition to the house. Itís a frigginí shelf! And then just an intense Centennial bomb for one tart grapefruit squirt - but wait, thereís some serious spice (a bit of coriander and anise? or maybe thatís just my overactive imagination and a different dimension of the bitters). Beautiful, especially when super fresh.

This copper ale poured with a modest off-white head that dissipated quickly. Everything about this beer is hoppy - the aroma and the flavor. It is very bitter, start to finish, with a slight malt flavor in the middle. The bitterness mellows and sort of grows on you as the glass empties.

A copper color on this one. The aroma is oranges, grapefruit, and some pine. The flavor is quite like chewing on an orange peel. Some grapefruit showing from the background like "Hello Im a grapefruit and it waves and says - ok now back to Orange Peel" Some alcohol notes show in the finish. Good IPA

Pours a hazy copper color with a white head. Aroma is malty, grapefruit hops. Flavor is malty, with a grassy, citrus hop finish.

UPDATED: MAY 4, 2007 Pours an almost clear reddish brown with a nice head and lacing. Aroma is grapefruit and citrus. Body is medium. Flavor was about what I expected: a complex hoppy West Coast (San Diego County) style IPA similar to Alesmithís and Stoneís offerings in this vein. The grapefruit/pine flavors from the hops do a good job of concealing the alcohol.
