COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
On June 29th, 2012, a “land hurricane” wreaked havoc on the DC Metro region and Port City’s hometown. Knocking over trees and powerlines, this derecho (day-RAY-cho), as the storm is called, left a million without power during a record-breaking heatwave. While the brewery was not damaged, we were left without power and searching for a way to SAVE THE BEER.

Procuring a generator, we were able to keep the brewery online and the beer saved. One batch of lager fermented at higher temperatures, producing what is called a California Common beer, or steam beer.

The storm left us a gift: our lager had changed into a golden opportunity, DERECHO COMMON.

DERECHO COMMON is deep golden in color, and has toasty, biscuity malt flavors. It is medium bodied with an assertive hop profile. It is dry hopped with Amarillo hops, which give it a spicy, citrusy hop kick on the finish.

Draft at DoG Street Pub. Pours light golden, exceptionally active with a nice active, pillowy head. Not much distinct flavor here, but this is quite pleasant beer ... Crisp, lightly tangy, perhaps a light woodsy finish. Very sessionable, indeed. (#4738, 8/18/2012)

Growler shared by Thorpe429. The beer is fairly hazy and appears golden orange hued. Small white head. The aroma brings citrus, malt, dank hops, resin. Smells nice. The flavor follows suit, with a grapefruit rind and malt presence. Light bodied and easily drinkable. I would definitely drink this again. A solid example of the style. Thanks to Amyliz4 for grabbing this growler from the brewery. Served in a Port City pint glass. Beer is a pale yellow. Good head and lacing. Crackers in the nose. Faint hops. Toasty and a bit bready. Fairly dry finish. Medium body. Quite tasty and a very nice example of the style.

Draft. Bright gold pour, white head. Some retention/light lace. Aroma of grain, grassy hops, light caramel, earth. Taste is nice hop bitterness: citrus, grassy hops, earth, bread. Palate is soft, slick, bitter finish. Very good, especially given the circumstances.

On tap at brewery as well as from growler immediately afterward. This beer poured a pretty clear yellow-amber color with a thick, foamy white head, not unlike the Downright Pilsener that they make (the base beer). Aroma was sweet malts, with a bit of grassy notes, and a touch of mild hop characteristics. Highly drinkable for a style that I’m always on the fence about, but given this was an accident, I certainly give them props for salvaging the brew!

Draft at DoG Street. Hazy gold with a tall, frothy white head. Not much in the aroma - grains, soft grass and light toasted malt. Taste seems slightly like a Kolsch. Grainy with light lemon, bread, toasted malt and grass. Body is light-medium with a strong, bubbly carbonation. Light lingering bitterness as well. Ends with more grassy hops, wheat/grain notes, bready malts and light lemony notes.

Tap at PP Old Towne. Pours clear light golden. Denser buttermilk head. Wispy lace. Nose is grainy, clean, light orange. Taste is orange peel, sharper citrus hops, spicy grass, sharp lemon. Refreshing. Better than expected. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
