COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our anniversary is in the middle of winter; the darkest, coldest days in the Mid Atlantic. To celebrate our first anniversary, we brewed a very special, strong dark ale to warm us against the cold. Imperial Stout is an extra strong version of stout, which originally was brewed by the British to withstand the rigors of export. We used the West Malle Trappist yeast to give it a Belgian character. The beer shows aromas of bakers chocolate and dried fruits. It is rich, dark and strong, with flavors of espresso and dark swiss chocolate, spice and a touch of orange zest. The beer is very limited: we brewed only ONE batch, on ONE day, to celebrate a very special milestone for our craft brewery.

Good show for these local guys. They make a great porter and this is a very drinkable, balanced imperial stout. Pours black with great head and lacing. Roast and dark chocolate with some subtle hops. Sweet and bitter finish. Booze well hidden. Hopefully they bring this back and pump it up a little to make something truly great. Tap at Black Squirrel.

Muddy dark brown/black, with a big tan head. Dark and malty, with lots of belgian yeast character. Taste is belgian yeast, with just a bit of roast dryness. I like it.

Growler courtesy of one of the marketing reps from the brewery, thanks Matt! Pours dark, slightly carbonated. Belgian yeast adds a slight sweetness but it’s not overly sweet and maintains a full bodied, hoppy roasty palate. Finish is relatively dry and lingering. Alcohol is completely hidden, overall delicious stout that’s deceptively drinkable.

I wasn’t even aware that Port City had released an anniversary beer, so it was a nice surprise to see this on tap at Beer Run. Pours a nearly opaque black color with a medium sized creamy dark brown head. Decent head retention. Aroma of fruity notes, roasted malts, chocolate, spices and an earthy finish. The taste is big roasted malts, sweet malts, anise, other spices, leather, plums, berries and a spicy hop finish. Full bodied, smooth, low-level lingering bitterness. A bit of booze is present, and this is definitely a sipping beer. Overall very nicely done.

On tap at Rustico in Alexandria right at the 6 PM DC metro-wide tapping. Served in a goblet. Pours black with a thing light mocha head. Some streaky lacing and a collar throughout. The nose has a nice bit of the Belgian yeast character plus chocolate. There’s a slight amount of orange in the background. The flavor follows the nose. The yeast and roast character is up front and then followed with some chocolate and light roast. There’s some dark fruits in the background to go along with the orange peel. Medium body with moderate carbonation and a fairly-smooth finish. Quite good.

Draft at American Ice, served at exactly 6 PM, when kegs were tapped simultaneously all around the district. Courtesy of Dave and Patrick, thank you gentlemen! Pour is very dark clear maroon, beige head with good retention and delicate lacing. Aroma of milk chocolate, cafe au lait, light winter spice. Taste is coffee grounds, burnt espresso, dark cocoa, and a bit of pepper. Great mouthfeel. Nice stuff. Happy birthday, Port City!!!
