Taste was consistent with aroma and a dry coffee aftertaste. Palate was a tad thin maybe even a bit watery with some carbonation. Thanks Ryan!

A: Pours a very dark, almost black color. The head is a mocha shade, a little under 3 fingers, with average retention and lacing.
S: Has the usual roast, coffee, and chocolate, but this one seems to have an additional earthy/mineral note. Nice smell.
T: About the worst I can say is that it’s really not that different than a lot of other porters I’ve had. Still, this one’s executed impressively. It does feature a vaguely salty character to it (similar to soy sauce) that meshes well with the roasty base. Otherwise, the usual roast, coffee, and chocolate are the main basis of the flavors here. It’s nature is easygoing rather than explosive.
M: Not the heaviest porter in the world, which is good. Drinks and finishes like a porter should, which means its medium bodied with a dry, bittersweet, slightly vegetal finish and lowish carbonation.
O: I enjoyed this. It measures up nicely to some of the better porters I’ve had (even if it doesn’t quite outdo them), and it’s well worth a purchase. Pair it with pulled pork/chicken BBQ.

Rating from on tap sample at the newly opened brewery on 4/26//11 and sample poured from 12 oz. bottle on 11/22/11 at the Washington Wine and Cheese Seminar at St. Patrick’s Church in Washington, DC.
Pours an opaque nearly black brown with a smallish head and fair to good lacing. The appearance was nothing special.
Aroma though was nice with roasted malt, chocolate and coffee and a touch of floral hops.
Taste was similar, again with roasted malt, chocolate and coffee and maybe some molasses. A little sweetness breaks through the roasted flavors at the finish.
Body is medium to full with carbonation on the soft side of average. Pleasant mouthfeel.
A nice example of a traditional porter.

Pours black with a short light head. Cocoa and coffee aromas. Taste is bitter but there is a subtle sweetness that comes through after that initial bitterness. Finishes dry with a coffeeish aftertaste.

12oz bottle: Pours a barely transparent dark mahogany with a spotty-lacing light tan head. Has a lightly toasted dark caramel and chocolate malty nose with a touch of smoke and dark fruits. Starts with average fullness and light sweetness with some chocolate notes and a touch of roasted coffee before a drier bittersweet finish. Could be a little more balanced, but still pretty true to style.

Bottle from Brigadier...thanks Nathan! - Pours dark brown with a thin, filmy tan head. Big chocolatey nose, with a sugary sheen overlaying a dark roasty body. Taste brings out the dark chocolate notes--bitter roasty notes with a touch of coffee and red wine-soaked dark raisins and prunes. Slick body is fairly big and has a bit of prickly carbonation. Unique and very yummy.
