COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Scottish beers in the 1800s were taxed on their strength, with the strong and better quality beers costing more. Customers developed the habit of asking for them by the tax ratings, or Shilling names. The 80 Shilling style was one of the stronger types which could be purchased, containing 4-5% alcohol, traditionally malty, without much hop character.

Pours amber with a white head. Malty aroma with some yeast notes. Caramel malt flavor with grainy malt, earthy hop flavors and yeasty spiciness.

The ever elusive Scottish ale is mine on this Sunday afternoon. Amber pour with beige head. Nose is butterscotch and fruits. Tastes of caramel, malty, earth, light spice, plums and Capri sun juice box Smooth lower carbonated. Semi swet finish.

Sampled at Schlafly Repeal of Prohibition Fest 2015 - Pours tannish / orange with a beige head. The aroma has dry toffee, nutty malt and caramel. It has a medium / light crisp body with semi-sharp carbonation. The taste starts with crackers, dry toffee, light peat and toast. The finish is dry and has exactly what you’d want from a Scottish ale. Really nice true version of the style.

Tasted on tap in a mini Willybecher glass at the 2015 Schlafly Repeal of Prohibition Festival. It poured a deep reddish amber colour with white foam. Solid maltiness but not sticky sweet. Grainy, nutty, earthy. Subtle UK-style hop balance, very faint but pleasant. Light-medium body and carbonation. 100% true-to-style 80/-. One of my favourites from today’s fest.

Sampled at Repeal. The last beer I had so taste buds were not ideal. Toast, caramel, proper malts, and some earth make a nice Scottish Ale. Not a favored style of mine but this is decent.

Light brown copper with big tan head. Aroma is lightly roasted malt and some brown sugar. Body is light, very light caramel sweetness. Slightly acidic hop flavor at the end. Like an apple pie without the apple pie spices.

Bottled. Pretty darned roast and malty for a low impact beer. A light bit of biscuit as well

UPDATED: APR 24, 2015 Poured at Port City - dark golden brown with a nice haziness and good white foamy head. Very nicely flavors accentuated by citrus fruits and malty caramel flavors on finish.

On tap. Sample. Pours an amber colour with small off-white head. Aroma is malts, caramel. Taste is pretty much the same. Ok beer.

"Trade from Thomassova. A nice lighter Scottish ale, though it has plenty of flavor and a nice smooth body. My last few newbies are all nice, but short of epic, this included. Nice light plum, earthy hops, sweet and smokey malt."
