Crafted specifically for the return of spring, Ways & Means will be a full bodied ASB. It will be complex and hoppy with a spicy, peppery character, which comes from a generous addition of rye malt. This golden-amber ale is also remarkably low in alcohol, at only 4.5%, making it extremely crisp and thirst-quenching for the transition of spring into the summer season. This ASB will have pleasant bitterness, with 55 International Bitterness Units (IBU), making it smooth and refreshing.

Ways & Means will be brewed with a blend of specialty malts and rye, including North American Pilsner malt, Rye malt, Golden Naked Oats and Crystal malt. It will also contain both Liberty and Centennial hops. The combinations make for a luscious malty and hoppy aroma. Ways & Means finishes with the typical clean and refreshing character for which Port City’s beers are known, and it is bound to be an overall crowd-pleaser.

Cask pull. Matte amber-orange in glass. Sudsy white head. Good webbing. Hemp fueled nose. Orange and caramel. Juicy taste of oranges, resin and grapefruit. Wheat in the background. Solid bitter finish. Nice.

On draft. Thin aroma, little lacing. Flavor if sticky grapefruit with quite a bit of spiciness. How is this at 4.5 percent?!

Cloudy, golden pour. Kind of like a light ipa with a tinge of wheat added. Pretty good.

Appearance: medium cloudy amber brown, short white head. Aroma: grapefruit, light caramel, some blood orange. Taste: juicy, bitter hops with medium caramel malt balance. Finish: slightly dry, with a bit of heat from the rye to balance the citrus bitterness. Notes: Easy drinking for sure, well balanced, and good flavors and aroma. Would drink again. 4oz pour at the Northern Virginia BrewFest. Poured a light hazy yellow color with a small off-white head. Aroma was lots of fresh, juicy citrus notes - citra? Galaxy? Lots of citrus fruits. Flavor was crisp, juicy citrus notes, some floral character, pretty good!

16 oz draft at Dino’s Grotto poured into a standard pint glass. Hazy yellow with off-white head. Aromas of citrus and tropical notes. Tastes of grapefruit citrus, lemon lime fruit and peel, floral hops, some rye. Medium body with a dry finish. Juicy mouthfeel, medium carbonation. Enjoyed it.

Tap. Very hazy light rust. Gras, rye, earth, and some pine and citrus in the aroma. Flavor is not bad, the grassiness is cut by the rye a bit. Piney finish. Medium body which was a bit heavier than I wanted.

Draft. Nice hop bite, almost British in style, with citrus and a crisp bitterness. Sessionable. Drying finish. Full mouthfeel and flavors. Plenty of malt to back up the substantial hops.

Growler from Drake. Pours hazy golden with small white head. Aroma is pine hops, medium body, medium carbonation, and some small bubble lacing. Taste is some citrus up front, herbal hops, pine hops, peppery rye, some spice, and some malt backbone. I would have guessed session IPA that has some rye. Not that easy to drink for the abv, but still pretty quaff able. Different and interesting, but not a favorite.
