Crafted specifically for the return of spring, Ways & Means will be a full bodied ASB. It will be complex and hoppy with a spicy, peppery character, which comes from a generous addition of rye malt. This golden-amber ale is also remarkably low in alcohol, at only 4.5%, making it extremely crisp and thirst-quenching for the transition of spring into the summer season. This ASB will have pleasant bitterness, with 55 International Bitterness Units (IBU), making it smooth and refreshing.

Ways & Means will be brewed with a blend of specialty malts and rye, including North American Pilsner malt, Rye malt, Golden Naked Oats and Crystal malt. It will also contain both Liberty and Centennial hops. The combinations make for a luscious malty and hoppy aroma. Ways & Means finishes with the typical clean and refreshing character for which Port City’s beers are known, and it is bound to be an overall crowd-pleaser.

Super hazy amber coloured body with a dense, three centimetre tall just off-white head. Aroma of bright grassy and herbal hops with a large rye-based malt nose and a lot of alcohol seemingly from the smell, even though 4,5% is printed on the front. Light to Medium-bodied; Strong rye flavours up front with a big hop flavour of grass, herbs and tropical fruits and a subdued yet earthy malt noticeable at the trailing end. Aftertaste is rich, yet light and showing a herbal note as well, but the hops are flavourful as well. Overall, a surprisingly nice balanced and unique beer that shows both a Light IPA quality and some of specialty grains (in this case, rye), while still remaining light and not cloying the slightest. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Total Wine in Alexandria, Virginia on 17-May-2015 for US$2,24 sampled at home in Washington just hours after returning from one of the premier beer states (Michigan) to realise that Virginia and Washington have nothing on any real beer-making centre.

Bottle. Bottled on: 02/24/15. A hazy copper pour with tons of nasty floaties and a smallish beige head. Old grapefruits, citrus rinds, wet cardboard, caramel, rye bread, and some pine trees dominate the aroma. Goes down medium-bodied. A big bready quality and some semi-sweet caramel start things off taste-wise. Grainy. Spicy. Bitter grapefruits and citrus rinds finish things off. Average at best.

Draft at Bronx Ale House. Not really an IPA - more like a rye PA, and a good one. Plenty of pleasantly astringent rye flavor, some yeast. Nice on the palate.

Sampled at Schlafly Repeal of Prohibition Fest 2015 - The beer pours golden / orange with an off-white head. The aroma has dry toasty bready malt, rye spice, light earth an some pine. The body is on the lighter side with some semi-sharp carbonation. The finish is dry and hoppy. Okay beer,

Tasted on tap in a mini Willybecher glass at the 2015 Schlafly Repeal of Prohibition Festival. It poured a mostly clear golden amber with white foam. A decent session IPA: malty with some caramel sweetness and predictable grapefruity hoppy traits. Medium body and carbonation, mouthfeel was a little mushy and oxidized. I didn’t detect any rye traits at all. Some of the other Port City brews were delicious, but this one wasn’t great, actually. There were several better APAs and Session IPAs here today.

Sampled at Repeal. Hazed golden. Rye nose with floral and fruit. A gentler flavor that is nice. The rye leads but melds nicely. A little spiciness. Fairly grainy and nice soft pale malts. The rye does nice things here.
