Crafted specifically for the return of spring, Ways & Means will be a full bodied ASB. It will be complex and hoppy with a spicy, peppery character, which comes from a generous addition of rye malt. This golden-amber ale is also remarkably low in alcohol, at only 4.5%, making it extremely crisp and thirst-quenching for the transition of spring into the summer season. This ASB will have pleasant bitterness, with 55 International Bitterness Units (IBU), making it smooth and refreshing.

Ways & Means will be brewed with a blend of specialty malts and rye, including North American Pilsner malt, Rye malt, Golden Naked Oats and Crystal malt. It will also contain both Liberty and Centennial hops. The combinations make for a luscious malty and hoppy aroma. Ways & Means finishes with the typical clean and refreshing character for which Port City’s beers are known, and it is bound to be an overall crowd-pleaser.

16oz pint at Brookland Pint pours a hazy orange with some clumpy white head. Nose has orange, grass, pine, mild honey/candy. Flavor has more of everything, sweetness, hops, lemon, orange, nectarine, other stone fruit. Crisp finish. Excellent.

Bottle from Bierkraft. Hazy amber color, small off-white head. Aroma has kiwi and gooseberry bush. Light-bodied. Crisp. Tropical fruity flavor with piney finish. Reminds me about my local Mufloni Pa/Ipa. Easy-going sweetish fruity session beer and my second tick from Virginia.

Draft. Dark brown with thin white head. Aroma and flavor are very understated. Prominent biscuity malt with a little citrus. Fine, just a little boring.

Poured from a growler. Orange color with very little head. Nose is citrusy, melons and grassy. Medium body. Taste is at first citrus zest and lemon which fades into a pleasant bitter finish. Rye comes through more as it warms up.

Alewife, Queens tap: Pours orange with a white head. Aroma is hoppy aroma, focused on the citrus. Not overly strong aroma though. Taste is slightly bitter. Rye malt backbone is definitely present. Well-balanced and easy to drink. Good show from Port City.

Location: Growler from Superstar Beer City, 10/27/14

Aroma: The nose is citrus hops and spice/pepper mostly, with a bit of a grassy undertone
Appearance: Pours a murky orange color with a small ring of white head and some spotty lace
Flavor: The flavor is peppery as well, with a sweet juicy citrus flavor, and a mid-bitter finish
Palate: The body is medium, it has a soft-to-average carbonation, clean feel, and a mid-dry finish
Overall Impression: I actually found this to be a pretty tasty one. There isn’t anything crazy going on here, just a simple, easy to drink, clean beer with a nice citrus flavor and a good peppery spice component too.

Cloudy dark orange. Sweet piney scent. Well balanced between hops and malts. A piney ipa with bready malts. Strong carbonation quickly fades.
