At 10.5% alcohol by volume, barley wine style ale is in a class all its own. Intense caramelized flavors create sweetness which is balanced by huge additions of Galena hops. Cascade aromatic hops are added at the end of the boil to compliment this strongest of ales.

Drank from a bottle at the 20th Mondial de la Bière, June 1, 2013. Dark amber, no head. Light aroma of barley sugar, hints of herbs. Herbs dry taste and a little spicy, a little malted barley, dry bitterness. Strong but not the intensity of its style!

On draft at the brewery. Somewhat murky dark orange pour, with a thin off white head. Sweet sugary, caramel, rotting fruit, and harsh bitterness. No thanks.

8/15/2011: Port Townsend Barleywine... Malty and rich; a bit underattenuated, but I prefer barleywine that way.

Draught at Port Townsend Brewing Company in Port Townsend, WA. Rating #121 for this beer.

bottle at mondial de la bière, mtl. pours hazy light brown-reddish with a minimal light beige head. cherries (!), nice caramel and toffee, even more butterscotch, booze, grassy, earthy. average carbonation, medium body - oily. medium complexity but most definitely what you would expect from a bw. good balance.

Bière brumeuse teintée de cuivre. Le nez est sucré et typiquement «vin d’orge», disons-le. En bouche, le brunch sucré nous en met plein les papilles. J’aurais aimé adorer, mais ça manque un peu de subtilité.

Bottle from CoOp Bellingham
Beautiful amber color with copper hue, small creamy head. Moderate malt and caramel aroma, light fudge. Good malt flavor, some caramel, quite sweet but not syrupy; strong bitterness with nice hop resins and light fruitiness. Bold Barley Wine. The final is expectedly long and powerful.
Straightforward American Barley Wine, very good.

Bomber. Appearance is a cloudy brownish amber color with a thin cap of foam. The aroma is dominated by caramelized sugar sweetness, dark fruits and malt. As expected, the flavor is heavy on the brown sugar, toffee and caramel along with notes of black cherry, dates, raisins and rum. Body is moderately thick and creamy with soft carbonation and a malty, alcohol warming finish. Well done English style Barley Wine.
