COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our secret weapon. A fulsome, winsome strong ale. A deep copper tinged brew for the true aficionado, longer fermentation and thrice hopping bring about a complex soft bitterness allied to a malt induced sweetness with the characteristic oily Fuggles hop perfume. Not just for students. Once "stuffed" savour the flavour of a glass as a digestif... True "Aroma-therapy".

Grain: Pale Malt, Roast Barley, Black Malt, Flaked Barley.
Hops: Galena, Nugget, East Kent Goldings.

Bottle, bought @ Beermerchants.com
Clear dark caramel colour with a big, frothy, off-white head. Aroma has toasted caramel, a hint of chocolate, light vinious, a bit of fruity hops. Medium carbonation, good creamy mouthfeel. Flavour is deep caramel, quite toasted, bordering on roasted, some chocolate, fairly dry and bitter finish. Grainy and slightly hoppy. Vinious and warming. A nice drink.

draft @ redlight redlight. Spicy fruity aroma with hints of caramel malts. Pours a reddish amber with a thick white head. Very malty with mild molasses notes and caramel malts with some feint vinous notes with spicy hops. Not bad. Rich malty beer, very barley wine-like.

Bottle. Pours clear mahogany with a big frothy off-white head. Malty aroma. Taste is full of dried fruits, some fresh mints supporting the malty body towards the end, which is moderate bitter.

Pours clear, streaming bronze with a dense white head. Aroma boiled sweets (Werthers, Murray Mints) with a waxy, carob-like note I get from some rauchbiers. Strong red apple flavour that isn’t unpleasant but a little overwhelming; hints of biscuit, nuts, a medicinal cherry Tunes bitterness..and lots of alcohol. Hard going- not the pick of the Porterhouse beers.

Bottle. Bronze with an off-white head. Aromas are berries with woody notes and soft spices. Vinous with red wine notes. Some musty vinegar aspects. Flavours are toffee and berries with spices. Quite dry with a peppery, yeasty, earthy finish. Some grapefruit bitterness. Decent.

I’m quite a fan of this beer. Its one of the few Porterhouse beers that carrys well in both bottle and tap formats and one of my staples everytime I go to Dublin. Its strength is noticeable and it feels somewhere between an Irish Red and a Strong English. However, it is very strongly flavoured with plenty of nuts and a sweet floral/fruit taste. Aftertaste is lengthy and satisfying.

Bottled, from The Drink Store, Dublin. Clear deep amber, rich firm head. Caramelly and spicy with some sweaty orange. Sweet and dense, full bodied. Mildly warming with marked spicy bitterness.
