Bottle (Sydney Summer Gathering 2007): A finer introduction to Imperial Stouts I could not have asked for. Opaque black with occassional ruby glints. A rich, oily nose dominated by sweet peppery alcohol notes. The mouthfeel and flavour are what really distinguishes this - lots of roasty flavours in a concentrated, oily, viscous palate, balanced by some chewy tar-like notes and lots of tobacco. Quite nice.

Bottle @ Porterhouse, Dublin. Deep deep mahogany color with small brown head. Aroma of sweet chocolate with some roast coffee and vinous undertones. Well hidden alcohol taste of coffee and chocolate with a well balanced bitterness. Much more balanced than Speedway stout. Full bodied but not treacley like Mephistophes or World wide stout. Overall an excellent well balanced stout.

Bottle @ Porterhouse, WC2, London. Dark red black color with a good light brown head. Aroma is licorice, alcohol and hoppy. Flavor is very nice balance between bitterness and sweetness. The best beer from Porterhouse !!

Gr0ve (2156) - Oslo, NORWAY - DEC 29, 2006
500 ml bottle. Dark black colour, but not entirely opaque. Medium-sized head, much for an imperial stout in fact. Head is light brown (cacao) at first, but then it changed to off-white. Quite impressive. Potent hoppy and alcohol nose. Quite distinct, and very sharp hop nose for an imperial stout. Sharp roasted flavours with a strong hoppy edge. Oily texture with a nice smooth mouthfeel. A bit sharp bitterness, but otherwise nice and distinct. Licorice and dark chocolate. Coffee. A little citrus? Head falls down entirely a the end.

to be fair, I was expecting more aroma from this. Very faint and malty. Tiny head. Surprisingly yeasty on the palate, with a hardcore licorice and roast in the finish. Dry coffee roast, some hops, raisins and a small amount of dark chocolate. There is also some extra bite which I cant really make out. Aftertaste kickess ass and lasts forever. Incredibly roasted. Awesome Imperial stout considering the global position of the source. NICE!! [edit] actually the aroma got so much better when it warmed up, very roasty and malty, yumm yumm

Just the beer required for a cold winters evening when the only thing to do is sit by the fire and enjoy....zzzzz.

larsga (6314) - Oslo, NORWAY - NOV 17, 2006
Medium brown head; opaque black body going dark brown at edges. Sharpish, nutty hop aroma with nilky dark malt notes. Sharp, resiny, bitter, chocolatey licorice taste with faintly oily mouthfeel and citric notes. Dryish aftertaste. Good, quite interesting. (0.5l bottle.)

KnutAlbert (6267) - Oslo, NORWAY - OCT 13, 2006
UPDATED: JAN 15, 2007 Bottled in Dublin. This must be the best beer in Ireland! A velvety stout where the warm afterglow shows the strength lurking under the smoothness. A beer to sip with a good book - in front of an open fire if you have one! Rerate nov 06: Lots of liquorice, sweet but with some hoppy bitterness.
