COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In response to growing interest in American style pale ales the Porterhouse has decided to resurrect a beer from our past. Based on a beer brewed somewhat ahead of its time, in our brewpub days, Hop Head is a highly aromatic, bitter, pale ale, made with the intention of satisfying the hop heads amongst us. Amber coloured, with a distinct malt character, generous use of hops for bittering and the triple addition of cascade and Hallertau Northern Brewer hops gives a conspicuous citrus character for both aroma and flavour. Along with a slightly higher alcohol content this results in a rich, fruity beer with an oily, citrus hop character and wonderfully rich, full mouthfeel.

330 ml. bottle. Amber colour with golden hues, medium sized off-white head, that leaves some nice laces behind. Light bitter aroma with caramel, bread, citrus hops, and a roasted union note (???) Medium bitter taste with some malts. Medium body with an slick texture. Finishes bitter and quite dry. Not the most elegant APA, still a pleasant experience.

Bottle. Pours a nice golden amber with decent white head. Aroma is quite hop heavy, floral and citrus with a slight musty pissy streak to it. Taste is quite floral, some green apple, little citrus, caramel malt quite present. Quite sweet with a bitter tang. Has some good qualities but needs a little refining.

On tap. Pours amber with a slight haze and a creamy beige head with some lacing. Fairly fresh, citrusy hoppy aroma. Medium-bodied, first lightly fruity, distinctly hoppy but with an unfortunate chemical tang. Hoppy, bitter finish. Starts of quite nice but some of the flavour components aren’t really all that charming. 170312

My first visit to Black Door – and they had not H.O.D.A. so I took this one. Aroma is rather nice with lots of hops and fruits. Flavour is also hoppy with exotic fruits, hints of citrus and resin. Good!
