In response to growing interest in American style pale ales the Porterhouse has decided to resurrect a beer from our past. Based on a beer brewed somewhat ahead of its time, in our brewpub days, Hop Head is a highly aromatic, bitter, pale ale, made with the intention of satisfying the hop heads amongst us. Amber coloured, with a distinct malt character, generous use of hops for bittering and the triple addition of cascade and Hallertau Northern Brewer hops gives a conspicuous citrus character for both aroma and flavour. Along with a slightly higher alcohol content this results in a rich, fruity beer with an oily, citrus hop character and wonderfully rich, full mouthfeel.

330ml bottle. Clear amber/copper pour with off-white head that leaves a little lace. Citrus dominates the nose with a good caramel backbone. There’s really nothing else going on there. A little strange on the palate. Caramel comes out first and then a strange pine and soap hoppiness comes along. Finishes with a weak bitterness.

UPDATED: NOV 11, 2012 Bardzo dobre i wytrawne ale z Irlandii. Mocno nachmielone i w aromacie także dominują przeróżne chmiele. Nawet śmiało go można przyrównać do najlepszych IPA

Cask@Porterhouse temple bar Hazy amber with fluff off-white head. Very resinous nose with some orange. Rich citrus hops and robust bitterness balanced by sweeter malts. This was a great pint.

First rating: Medium beige head. Hazy opaque brown body. Perfumy resiny freshly cut wood aroma with floral notes. Very vivid and clear. Dry wooden resiny taste with floral notes. Mid-bodied. Sharpish chalky mouthfeel. Dry resiny floral aftertaste with citric mealy notes. Nice, drinkable, full of flavour, and very fresh. (0.3l draft at Charlie’s Bar, Copenhagen.) 7,4,6,3,14=3.4

Second rating: Big beige head. Clear brown body with strong carbonation. Spicy resiny herbal aroma with dusty rye and caramel notes. Dry resiny tropical fruit taste with wooden perfumy notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, soft mouthfeel. Dry wooden spicy herbal aftertaste with fruity notes. Pretty good, but too dry and austere in the finish. (0.33l bottle, from Kihoskh, Copenhagen.) 6,4,6,3,12=3.1

[Bottle from Beers of Europe that Jim shared with me - cheers!] Deep amber with a moderate white head. Spicy red berries up front with a twang of grapefruit, then some bread and butterscotch. The hefty bitterness in the finish is perhaps a little cardboard-y, but nevertheless this is pretty decent stuff.

On tap (@Charlie’s Bar, Copenhagen):Deep golden, unclear, big stable off-white head leaving rings on the glass, flowery to piney hoppy nose, a bit leafy as well; relatively dry bitter-sweet flavour, almost medium bodied; bone-dry lingering grapefruity-hoppy finish. A fine one…
