In response to growing interest in American style pale ales the Porterhouse has decided to resurrect a beer from our past. Based on a beer brewed somewhat ahead of its time, in our brewpub days, Hop Head is a highly aromatic, bitter, pale ale, made with the intention of satisfying the hop heads amongst us. Amber coloured, with a distinct malt character, generous use of hops for bittering and the triple addition of cascade and Hallertau Northern Brewer hops gives a conspicuous citrus character for both aroma and flavour. Along with a slightly higher alcohol content this results in a rich, fruity beer with an oily, citrus hop character and wonderfully rich, full mouthfeel.

Draft pour at the Porterhouse brewpub in Temple Bar, Dublin. For an APA style beer, this is a very muted and toned down pale. With the name ’Hop Head’ you might be expecting more of a citric/hop punch. Very easy drinking but more like a bitter than a true pale ale.

33cl bottle in IPA glass. Pours clear dark amber. Head is tanned, thick, soapy and with a beautiful lacing. Aroma of herbal hops. Quite raw. Strong malts, bitter hops, pleasant carbonation, full bodied velvet APA. If you need a hops-shot -> this beer is the right choice. I was saturated after one bottle.

Amber to brown, clean looks. Very American. Quite sharp, resin hops, sweet malts, not fruity though. Clean yeast. Light body yet bitter, clean but not crisp, due to the amber malts. A bit too heavy in the specialty malts, this beer, and too few more floral hops. Good brew though, quality stuff. (33cl bottle from Saveur Bière)
