DocLock (4047), Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA May 2, 2008 Pour: Deep black, brown edges, 3-finger tan head, great lacing
Nose: roasty choc malt, molasses, fig, almond, brown sugar, perfumy florals late
Taste: Roasty choc malty, dry, slight rauchy, molasses, almond, walnut
Overall: Medium palate heft, nicely balanced, this is a truly great stout that, should I ever vist the Emerald Isle, I will seek out ahead of Guinness and Murphy’s.
TimE (1013), Tokyo, Japan Jul 26, 2008 Pitch black color with a dark brown head. The nose is very unique with strong salty black licquorice, dark chocolate, treacles, and tobacco notes. Did I mention how salty this is? Very dry and intense mouth with salty black licquorice, dark chocolate and dark fruit. Sightly warming. Med body. Saltiness just lingers in the mouth. Truely an amazing stout that is not getting its props. Retorp (2148), Tampa, Florida, USA Jul 18, 2008 The aroma is dusty, detergenty with some dark fruit and dark roasted malt. The body is black with a crazy lasting, thick mocha head. The first sip is sweet chocolate, fruity, malty and it has a very creamy feel. Lingering ashy, sweet fruit flavor with a bit of astringency. cellar (271), Dublin, Ireland Jul 12, 2008 @ Porterhouse, Dublin: Black, long lasting cafe au lait head, notes of coffee, liquorice, chocolate, roasted malt, mainly bitter and dry finish. mjs (427), Finland Jul 8, 2008 (Draught at Porterhouse on 2008-07-01) Almost black. Medium-sized dense tan head. Almost burned aroma in nose. Full and dry palate. Hops, roasted malts and lots of bitterness in taste. Sligtly boring. Ok aftertaste. Maria (3816), Thisted, Denmark Jul 7, 2008 Thanks Tom/After4ever. It’s a black beer with a huge, nice, creamy and nougat colored head. The aroma is mild and has notes of roasted malt, coffee and licorice. The flavour has a light sweetness, notes of chocolate, coffee, licorice, roasted malt and it’s smooth with a nice body. It’s really not very complex, but it’s uncomplicated and very harmonic and constantly invites to another sip, then another etc. I like it a lot!
