BückDich (4558), Boise, Idaho, USA May 14, 2008 Bottle: Thick black color, tan head and nice light lacing. Nose of licorice, sharp astringency, some molasses and coffee. The flavor is bitter, some mild almond, coffee, cherry and chocolate notes. Bright astringency, dry mouthfeel and a nice creamy balanced tail. Good dry stout, high acidity, easy drinkability and a minerally note.
reakt (838), Greater London, England Oct 8, 2008 Draught @ The Porterhouse, Covent Garden. Mahogany with a thick beige nitro head. Dark chocolate, roast malts, black filter coffee and a hint of soap in the nose. Slightly thin in the mouth but has good roasty notes, baking chocolate and some bitter hops in the finish. DougShoemaker (2613), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Sep 30, 2008 Aroma is dominated by roasted coffee and liquorice, cocoa notes too, black, sporting a tiny toffee head. Taste is unbeatable coffee, gorgeous liquorice, fine dark chocolate. Medium bodied, superbly balanced, bitter and bold. Incredible! Thanks Torontoblue. thewolf (3963), Kolding, Denmark Sep 30, 2008 Tap @ Porterhouse, London.
Pours almost black with a great, staying, creamy, beige head. Exceptionally good looks. Sweet, malty aroma, some chocolate and soft roasted. Not much of it, though. Low carbonation, fine, creamy mouthfeel - much like a good Guinness. Flavour is rather sweet and malty, good dark chocolate, nuts, liquorice and a great, long aftertaste. brentfeesh (937), Gadsden, Alabama, USA Sep 23, 2008 750 ml bottle sent from Secret Santa 2008. Quite dark with a bubbly brown head. Very roasty aroma with licorice. Sharp but semi-sweet with roasted/burnt grain. Complex with a bit of malt with earthy/spicy hop presence that is not over done. Solid. Carbonated medium body with semi-dry finish. Pretty good for a style I do not usually get into. after4ever (1752), Brier, Washington, USA Sep 8, 2008 750, corked and baled. Thanks, BitBucket! This was truly above and beyond the call without a doubt. The cork was a real SOB to remove--ended up chipping glass off the neck TWICE, using a garden variety wine bottle opener. This was after I gave up messing with the cork and just cut the top off. wtf? Impacted to say the least. But that’s neither here nor there wrt the beer, since I rinsed the shards off the top under the tap.
Pours a jet-black body under a thick, surging, moussy burnt tan head. Plenty of webby lacing left as it falls, but it sticks around to some degree for a good long while. Sweet licoricey nose...delectable. Creamy medium body. Plenty of chocolate and licorice on the mid-palate with whiffs of licorice darting in for cameos here and there. Long, mild, creamy finish. This isn’t really a 750 beer, it’s a 6-pack beer, but it’s lovely stuff. Could drink a fair bit of it if they got the price down where it ought to be, instead of hovering around 75 cents an ounce in the states at boutique bottle shops.
