A robust, Irish-style stout with 75 pounds of rolled and steel-cut oats included in the mash. The oats add a creamy texture and velvety smoothness that help round out the roasted barley bite. Served nitrogen-conditioned for a thick, frothy head.

(Cask at GBBF, London, 5 Aug 2008) Black colour with frothy, brown head. Roasted, hoppy nose with fruity/citrussy hop notes, pine and resin. Malty taste with soft roasted flavours and notes of piney hops. Not that bitter, distinct but rather short finish. Lovely balance. Very drinkable and very nice beer.

A Mes rate: Gravicask at GBBF.
Coca cola coloured with a tan rim. Creamy malt with some nice roast coffee notes. A slight sourness with a fairly high level of sweetness. Not particularly balanced and it’s certainly not brimming with character but it’s ok.

Cask conditioned - gravity dispense - GBBF 2008. A black beer with a tiny ring of tan head. The aroma is fairly sweet and sugary with some light roast. Pretty unpleasant in the mouth with sour milk and chocoloate. Very disappointing.

Cask at GBBF 08. Black, thin tan head. Hoppy liquorice aroma. Peppery hop, tarry, liquorice mlats. It’s a wee bit odd. Hops are too dominant and the liquorice isn’t my favourite flavour. Hops have a bit of cat pee to them.

Cask@GBBF2008. Black colour, no head. Aroma is mild roast, old coffee, licorice and some caramel malts. Flavour is the same with the roast being more evident. Smooth and refreshing.

Aroma and flavor of cocoa. Super rich, smooth flavor showcases the best of oatmeal’s roles in stouts.

Pours opaque black, with a thin, tan head. After the head fades, some translucent mahogany edging shows itself, as well as some dotted lacework. A partial skim-coat endures for the duration. Aromatics lead off with dark chocolate, espresso, fudge, and roasted oats. Quite rich, and it has a lush, doughy component underneath. Full bodied, exceedingly oily and creamy. The carbonation is on the low side, and allows the velvet to roll on the tongue. An oily mix of brownie batter, coffee beans, and roasted barley start the pallet. The slick oils from the oats drys up quickly and a slight bitterness steps forward. Oreo shells drizzeled with Kahlua in the shadows. Finishes with a lingering dryness/oily mix, and plenty of roasty chocolate. Talk about an under-the-radar brew. Great stuff.
