Viking_Hammer (292), Lynnfield, Massachusetts, USA Feb 22, 2008 Sampled at the EBF in Boston. One of my favorite beers I had at the fest, and I had quite a lot. Pours black opaque with a small brown head. The aroma was smoke, chocolate, coffee, toffee, and caramel. Very complex flavors that are nicely balanced. Amazing beer. Thanks Portsmouth Brewery.
Dickinsonbeer (2514), Hoboken, New Jersey, USA Feb 23, 2008 EBF 08. Port soaked oak chips added to the Kate the Great. Pours a very dark brown- near black with a foamy sticky off beige head. Aroma is nutty, toffee, sharp dark crystal malts- roasted barley, tons of charred wood, and some dark red wine character and a bit fruity. Flavor is a bit boozy right away- some very dark bitter chocolate malts, some roast, lgith coffee, astringent woody heavily soaked port chips- and tannic and astringent in the finish. A bit over oaked and over the top. bu11zeye (3656), Frisco, Texas, USA Feb 21, 2008 (Draft, Port Oak Aged version) Pours an oily black body with a spare brown head. Aroma of chocolate, vanilla, roastiness, caramel, and lactose. Flavor of roasted malt, lactose, chocolate, light vinous, and oak with a dry finish.
