MartinT (4307), Montreal, Quebec, Canada May 20, 2008 My Bottom Line:
Strawberry jam and caramel maltiness are spun around by a massive alcohol blow until a drying hop bitterness is able to bring this Wheat Wine back into one piece.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam circumspects the murky pale red.
-The wooden character and the chosen hops are a great fit.
-Rough around the edges, this might simply be a sign of its young age.
-The body is rich and its base cereals proud. Too bad this pervasive alcohol is marring most of its work.
On tap at the brewpub.
smith4498 (332), Miami, Florida, USA Aug 19, 2008 Bottle courtesy of Oakes and Beershine. Pours light brown caramel with minimal head. Wheat aroma with some alcohol coming through. Sweet malt and wheat flavors. Medium body with average carbonation. An interesting beer. mgumby10 (1624), West Palm Beach, Florida, USA Aug 10, 2008 Courtesy Oakes and Beershine. Pours a clear copper color, with a small off white head. Smells of sweet dark malts, sweet fruits, bready yeast, and a bit of wheat, although it wasnt clearly defined. The flavor is much of the same. Lots of bready fruity yeast flavors coming through, with a hop bitterness to it that tingles the palate. The alcohol presence was also quite evident as I got some heat in the finish. Havent had a lot of wheat wines, but I thought this was decent. acrdz (4248), Pennsylvania, USA Aug 5, 2008 Sample from a bottle. Medium cloudy orange copper appearance. Heavy creamed caramel malt in the nose, some sharp and hoppy honey scented hops, clouded a bit, I think, but the heavy alcohol and caramel character. Big, sticky, but thankfully not overly sweet... chewy caramel all over this thing, a light white wine character in the back p;lays nicely with the heavy, thick and syrupy malt. Little to no wheat character but that seems just fine with this one. TURDFERGUSON (1114), Carrboro, North Carolina, USA Aug 4, 2008 22oz bottle, provided by IPFreely, Saturday at BCTC. Thanks, Tim! Had a mild syrupy presence (much like the imperial ipa I had right before it), some brown sugar, citrus and a bit of an alcoholic burn in the finish. I liked the nose a bit more than the flavor, but overall thought this was pretty good. kmweaver (1948), Takoma Park, Maryland, USA Aug 4, 2008 22oz bottle, provided by IPFreely, Saturday at BCTC. Thanks, Tim! Pours a slightly hazy, orange-amber color; light tan head with patchy lacing. Loads of tea-like malts and boozy red fruits in the aroma; tannic, dried fruits, slightly astringent. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: lots of intense, chewy dried red fruits, tea, sweet maltiness; mineral and citrus bitterness on the periphery; somewhat lightly tannic. Lengthy finish: red tea, dried fruits, and lasting tannins.
