Post Road Pumpkin Ale is a revival of a beer brewed by the early American colonists. Pumpkins were plentiful, flavorful and nutritious and they blended nicely with barley malt. Hundreds of pumpkins are blended into each batch of Post Road Pumpkin Ale, creating a beer with an orange amber color, warm pumpkin aroma, biscuity malt center and crisp finish. Post Road Pumpkin Ale is spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg.

Bottle. Pours a clear amber with a medium head. Strongly malty, sweet aroma with a bit of spice. The flavor is drier and somewhat bready, with the pumpkin coming through mostly on the finish. Less heavily spiced than most other pumpkin beers. Wasn’t crazy about it at first, but it grew on me a little bit as it went on. Still, a bit dull for its style.

Pours a clear coppery color with off-white head. Pumpkin, pumpkin pie spice, and some bread on the nose; follows onto the palate. Medium bodied. Finishes with pumpkin pie spice.

Pours a glass of orange beer. It is a pretty clear glass (I prefer a thicker texture to pumpkin ale’s) but it’s aroma is nevertheless rather good. Refreshing and well balanced out.

Sampled from the bottle. Pours a clear gold with a near white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has earthy grain and musty pumpkin with a touch of spice. Flavor has bread and grain with an earthy pumpkin note and some spice.

Bottle. Amber with a thin white head. Squash, vegetal, dandelion, cinnamon and nutmeg. Dry cinnamon flavor that fades out to an unsalted pretzel. Lighter, watery body.

Modestly good news for 2015: this still pours an attractive, clear coppery amber with a good-sized off-white head and good retention. But the nose is greatly improved, with pie spices and vanilla now noticeable along with some fruit. That continues in the glass, where the pumpkin now is more recognizable and slightly richer as opposed to a more generic and slightly sour squash. It’s nice to a brewery learning as it goes. The 2014 version was more of a history project than a tasty drink. But this still has a fairly mild flavor _ certainly lovers of Pumking or Punkin will each give it a pass, though for different reasons _ and it doesn’t come within a league of St. Ambroise. Still, what was poor is now decent. Progress.
