75cl bottle from Delices et Caprices shared with Steve.Poured a dark redish brown with a deep off white head.Immediate dark fruit aromas with toffee and caramel. In the taste a lovely mixture of toffee, plums, figs and butterscotch all nicely balanced and blended together making a smooth drinking and tasty beer.On warming a little, other flavours surfaced including raisins and dates. The alcohol in this one is well hidden.Near syrupy smooth and delicious beer and really glad we tried it in the rare 75cl sized bottle.

It has been a long time since my last Belgian ale and it showed as I found this one to be spot on as a slow sipper. Into a chalice at cellar temperature. Couldn’t be more excited to get in the glass as a plume of foam rises quickly quickly toward the lip. Settles out a half-half mix of well conditioned sparkling mahogany beer and towering, tannish head that adds creaminess to the mouthfeel and leaves a thick lace. Complex nose of figs in syrup, stewed rhubarb and sweet dark stone fruits, treacle and tar, blood and rust and just a hint of alcohol spice. Ripe, juicy plums and dried fruits dominate the palate with a backbone of butterscotch, dark toffee praline, wood and mild rust in the back. Alcohol is well hidden though there is a hint of sherry in the finish. Good length; a continuation of the palate. Nice body; not as big as anticipated but definitely well poised. The carbonation nothing but a prickle to the tip of the tongue. Smooth, almost oily for the remainder. Delicious overall. Really pleasant drinking. (33cL, bottled on 31/10/11, Cellarbrations Carlisle)

Bottle at Monks. Cloudy brown with a big pillowy off-white head. Well blended sweetish doubel. Raisins. Dried figs, plums, and dates. Medium dark caramel. Big lace forms over time. Very nice slightly chewy double, almost a quad. Vanilla caramel with some nice darker malt notes to balance.

Pour is a cloudy brown with a large tan head. Aroma is some dark fruit and loads of brown sugar. Flavor is some sugar, figs and butterscotch. Finish is sweet sugar and some plum. Lots of carbonation with this beer. But it is still a very flavorful Belgian dark ale.

Brown 33cl dumpy bottle, best before 23 Apr 2012, been in my stash for some time: opened and reviewed Sunday 22 May 2011. Poured into a Hoegaarden Grand Cru glass: the sediment seemed to stay in the bottle, so my glass was full of a dark reddy brown beer which had a very slight haziness to it. On top a well formed and deep off-white head of tight bubbles. Malty molasses fill the nose, treacle and toffee notes complete the smells I found. Roasted/toasted malty bread taste, with an alcohol undertone. Sweet and tangy, but lacking something when comparing with the better beers within this style. I thought the beer a bit lively and over carbonated, the alcohol was too prominent also, the body not possessing enough strength or complexity to control it. My wife liked this beer more than I did, the malty sweetness winning her over, compared to my more measured overview which pushed it towards more average scores for the style.
