3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 mcberko (4056) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - JAN 29, 2013
650mL bottle, pours a hazy copper with a small white head. Aroma is on the maltier side for a IIPA, with syrupy caramel malts, resinous hops, fresh red fruits, and some citrus fruits. Flavour is extremely fruity and malt-heavy as well, with under-ripe berries, syrupy caramel malts, and then some citrus and resinous hops fight their way to the front. Something doesn’t mesh so well here - the under-ripe berries are quite pronounced and the malts are quite syrupy. The hops aren’t that far forward - perhaps not enough were used to balance the malt? Anywho, it’s decent, but quite flawed. Good local attempt at a IIPA, but needs refinement.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 fiulijn (12179) - Malmö, DENMARK - JAN 26, 2013
Bottle from Brewery Creek, Vancouver Amber color, darker shade, hazy, with creamy head, quite persistent. The arom ais interesting, very hoppy-forward; initially fresh fruity and zesty, with some citrus fruits; then an earthy and sweaty component joins in. The mouthfeel is quite dry; flavor of malt and toffee, quite strong, turning into some caramel later; the hopping is strong, with powerful bitterness and bold aromatic components; a lot of piney resins, citrusy fruitiness, bergamot, and medium earthy character too (soil and yeast). Long final, with tongue-scraping hop resins. Powerful, still a bit rough, but with some fresh and fruity components.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 mgermani (967) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - JAN 24, 2013
Pours a hazy copper with a thin off-white head and a nice, spicy hop aroma. Strong malt backbone - light sweetness and definite toastiness - with more great spicy hops. Bold yet nicely balanced - very fresh tasting. Moderate body with decent carbonation - I think I kicked up a bit of sediment in my second pour (the remainder of the 650ml bottle) which caused it to be a bit creamer than intended, but no complaints. Very solid local offering - and I love the freshness!
