riversideAK (1632), Shoreline, Washington, USA Aug 11, 2008 Roasted aroma of coffee with a light sweetness. Dark brown pour with a tan head. Flavor is dominated by roasted malt and coffee. A moderated sweetness comes and goes. Pretty robust and roasty. Pretty good if you like coffee. BlackDonald (1039), North Carolina, USA Jul 19, 2008 Immediately notice the Henry’s coffee in the nose. Bitter, dry and roasty with ints of coffee, chocolate and cocoa. Slightly acrid with nothing but coffee on the palate, the coffee make the acidity go way up and that’s all you taste and the maltiness is not there to back it up. A classic example of when not to put the coffee in the the brewing process. DarkElf (2681), La Jolla, California, USA May 3, 2005 (2 liter "coke" bottle: Purchased at the brewery) This was the last of several beers sampled at a large ratebeer gathering at O’Brien’s, so my notes are somewhat sparse. This beer was purchased at the brewery by a buddy, and yes, they package their beers in "Coke" bottles. It’s not a growler fill. Anyway, the beer pours nearly black in color, but with little head or carbonation to speak of. A strong roasted coffee aroma dominates the nose. In fact, the flavor is dominated by strong roasted coffee as well. Guess I should expect that given that it is brewed with Martin Henry coffee. Despite the poor external indicators of carbonation, the palate seems sufficiently carbonated, though it is a bit watery. In the end, it’s better than I expected, but lacks complexity. It is a one-dimension beer -- coffee -- and makes no excuses about it. SDbruboy (1822), San Diego, California, USA Apr 27, 2005 64 oz. plastic bottle from the brewery, shared by DarkElf - thanks! Poured dar brown with orange highlights at the rim and no head to speak of. Aroma is roasty, with coffee malts and bitter chocolate. Flavor is also roasty, dry and strongly of dark chocolate with some herby hops present as well. Medium body and a bit of carbonation. Pleasant but not great. DaSilky1 (1622), San Diego, California, USA Apr 22, 2005 double burnt mohagany and no head (from growler) Organic roast and smoked meat in the aroma..even a touch of tang too (like green olive). Flavors mirror the smoked meat in the aroma..and the roastedness was moderately active..but complexity was on the thin side and the mouthfeel tended to be a little watery. Quality though, for sure. Thanks Darkelf for sharing.
