3.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
11.2 oz bottle into a footed pilsner glass.
A: Pours a dark chestnut color. The head is a creamy-looking one finger offwhite shade. It fades away at a decent rate, but leaves a miniscule ring of lacing on the glass.
S: There’s a pleasant nuttiness at first, with even more pleasant grassy hops hidden beneath that. Hints of coffee abound; the aroma has a real hazelnut vibe I enjoy. The aroma could be a bit bolder, otherwise I really like it.
T: At first, the hazelnut qualities from the aroma trickle down to the flavors. After that, it transitions to more raisin-y tone near the back end, before a touch of hops cleanse the finish some. It’s too sweet, I think - some more grassy hops on the back end could have really made this one special.
M: This is a bit more lumbering than one would expect from a 4.5% dark lager; this has both a positive and negative effect. On the plus side, it helps give it a richer feel, but at the same token, it doesn’t have the drinkability it should feature. Carbonation is soft, which is a good match for the treacly texture.
O: Being a Czech dark lager, I expected more Saaz hops. It’s certainly well made, but like I said, it’s just too sweet at the end of the day. Still pretty good.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle. Dark reddish brown with a modest beige head. Aroma of chocolate, dark berries, gentle spices. Sweet with toffee, some chocolate, stewed fruit and berries. Gentle bitter finish with some spices. Pretty good - rich for 4.7% and well balanced. Certainly have this one again.

4.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
My friends from ratebeer.com: I read the other reviews with quite some surprise. Obviously, most of you are not familiar with this style. This is a fantastic example of dark Czech beer. Pours deep brown with an off-white head. The aroma is exquisitely Czech, note the slight ester character. The taste is clean with a wonderful rich, dark character. I have been in the Czech Republic many times and this is what their dark lager is all about. For those of you only familiar with the sledgehammer flavor of American micro beers, you will not have the refined beer palate to appreciate this. It is very subtle, elegant and amazing.

1.5 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 5/20
500ml bottle, from Party Source. On close out for $4. Product out of code label, covered by the discount sticker, appears to read 23.02.13, when I peel it back. Thanks, Party Source. Clear red brown color. Thin ring of off-white head. Big, gross chunks of yeast floating about in the body. Dark fruity caramel aroma. Moderate sweet taste. Some toffee taste. Hint of chocolate malt. Light to medium body. Smooth, kind of crisp, lighter carbonation. Those yeast chunks are so big I feel like I can feel the texture of them pass by my lips as I take sips of this. Yes, it’s very unsettling, and that alone brings the palate score here down from a 3 to a 1. Flavor and everything else isn’t that bad otherwise, considering it’s a beer that’s more than a year expired on store shelves. Just a kind of too sweet taste, and a musty dark fruity malty aroma.

Despite the low rankings and my lack of taste for lagers, I actually really enjoyed this one. Very malty and sweet.

2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Good looking on the pour, dark brown to black with small creamy beige head. Aroma gives no clues, taste is overly sweet, cola flavored, some roast grain bitterness and very sweet finish. Much sweeter than I like, but may be a good dessert beer.
