Tasted on 9/22/13 from a corked and caged 750mL bottle purchased at Louisville Beer Store. Pours dark, coffee brown with a very thick and rocky tan head that slowly recedes to average lacing. The nose is full of spicy yeast with just a touch of dark chocolate malt and some tropical fruit and citrus hops. The flavor is the same, really focused on the spicy, very dry, funky yeast, with the darker malt and unique hops providing more background. The body is medium with just livelier than average, stinging carbonation, and a long bitter hops and spicy yeast finish.

Pours an opaque dark chestnut brown color with mahogany edges and a one finger beige head that slowly settles into a lasting ring. Splotchy lacing left behind. Earthy, funky aroma with resinous, oily hops, musty funk, zesty spice and a complex malt presence. Spicy anise and licorice along with grassy pine needle, pepper and roasted dark chocolate. Really weird with oak, chocolate, musty funk, earthy hops, peppery spice and roasted malt notes competing with one another. Medium body with a slightly chalky mouthfeel and complex flavor profile. Dry and slightly musty with some farmhouse funk and prominent licorice sweetness along with peppery spice, dark roast and sweet malts. Kind of odd but has nice complexity with the galaxy hops and dark saison notes coming through.

Dark black in color, thick foamy brown tan head... Aroma of citrus hops, roasted malts, earthy notes.... Flavor is fairly ashy and earthy, lots of burnt malts, funk, dry hop finish... Okay , not my favorite from them ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle @ home, from WholeFoods SF. Pours very fizzy black with huge beige head. Funky nose idd, pissy. Taste more sour, salmiac, dry bitter end. Curious beast.

bottle, once you get usd to the black, roasty &bsour/funky combo this bers is quite good. Black pour, active mouthfeel, roasted malts, funky yeastiness, fruity floral farmhouse notes. nice

One funky bottle! Had this last maybe two years ago, remembered how funked up it was and still surprised. Here’s a beer that shows you the barnyard funk flavors of brett. Sweaty horse? Gym socks? Barnyard must? Check, check, check. Like a sheep’s milk cheese that is almost too much but still good. And then mix that up with dark roasted malts to complement. The result is unique. As strong as the funk is (have I been clear?) this is somehow a pretty drinkable beer, a testament to the wizards at Prairie.

A surprising beer. Dark and sour, not the obvious combination. Actually, the roasted qualities overpower its tartness, sadly, but still a really good beer.

Bottle. Surly Darkness 2014. Good beer with a pleasant sourness that wasn’t too strong.

Bottle shared by Bvery at Darkness day. Pours dark brown with big head. Strong sour funk smell with some citrus. Taste of bitter hops not much sour. Bitter finish. Okay beer.
