neongolden (598) - Linköping, Sweden/Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - DEC 6, 2014
(355ml bottle @ VilleValla Pub, Linköping, Dec 4, 2014) Pours pitch black with a tiny tan head that dissipates rapidly without lace. Aroma of roasted cacao, dark chocolate, strong black coffee, vanilla bean, lightly spiced woody dark rum/coconut character is surprisingly faint, no hint of chili on nose. On the palate, pretty dry and roasty, semisweet dark chocolate, espresso, vanilla bean, lightly woody, earthy, bit of spice/rum quality but not much. Lightly sweet dark malts dissipate towards the finish giving way to moderate roast, earth, wood, a slightly spicy but not really hot pepper character and coffee grounds/cacao beans. Fairly full but oily body with moderate carb. This is a really good stout, no doubt about it. The rum barrel seemed surprisingly restrained in this beer and I don’t know if that’s a plus or minus. It is a nicely balanced impy stout but when consumed next to Fred’s Blend the barrels in the latter contributed substantially more balance and complexity. Not a knock against the Pirate, to be fair!

Bottle shared by alexsdad06. Poured a black color with an average frothy brown head that lasted with excellent lacing. Moderate to heavy roasted chocolate, coffee, vanilla, hot spice, wood and alcohol aroma. Heavy dark sweet toasted dark chocolate malt flavor with a heavy dark sweet and small alcohol bite finish of long duration. Full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. This is a standout beer.

12 oz bottle shared with Tmoney99 and DrSilverworm. Pours dark brown to black in color with a small beige ring. The aroma and flavor have everything as advertised; big coffee, vanilla, cocoa, dark chocolate roast, the rum barrel may be the part that is present in the least concentration; not a bad thing, this is just a great example of a beer, barrel, and additions working very well together.

Listed at 14% ABV (like it fucking matters, christ). Pours thick and black with a fair cocoa brown head that diminishes quickly to a very thin ring and leaves like two spots of something resembling lace, since the glass is coated with alcohol. Nose involves roast coffee, sweet chocolate, that pepper spice that I’m addicted to, maybe some coconut around the beer, but nothing insane from the rum barrel. Very sweet, decently bitter. Thick yet not incredibly heavy, fairly oily and slick, low carb, finishing lengthy with chocolate, toast, and pepper spice that lingers in the esophagus. It’s really quite a chocolate bomb up front, but that fucking spice on the end...

Bottle. Black. Amazing aroma of rum barrels, and chiles. The taste adds warm oak, cocoa, and roasted malts and chocolate on the finish. Insanely smooth feel, rich and creamy. Awesome!! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Black with some wispy mocha head. Aroma is dominated by coffee and chilis with some chocolate. Taste adds vanilla, fudge and wood. Syrupy sticky mouthfeel. Absolutely awesome.
