Prairie Ale is our classic saison. We brew this beer with pilsner malt, wheat malt, flaked wheat, and cane sugar. A healthy dose of saaz hops are used to add a spicy element to the beer. Prairie Ale is fermented with a mix of ale yeast, wine yeast, and brettanomyces. Notes of black pepper and pineapple can be found in this beer.

C&C 750 ml bottle thanks to soonerchamps. Pours a hazy yellow-gold with medium sized bubbly head that fades slowly. Aromas are lemons, Belgian yeast, spicy Saaz hops, black pepper, light wine fruitiness and subtle brett/barnyard. Taste is sweet and spicy. Honey, black pepper, and Saaz hops dominate but thereís still a lot of lemons and barnyard in the finish. Very enjoyable saison.

Pours murky golden with a soapy white head. The aroma has floral notes, apricots, rich orange, perfume and some sweetness. It has a medium body thatís rich with some gentle light carbonation. The flavor begins with citrus, stone fruit, earthy yeast, sweet/tarts, bugs and huskiness. The finish has dirtiness, funk and ash. Enjoyable and hides the alcohol well.

Bottle. Head is initially average sized, frothy, white, mostly lasting. Body is hazy medium yellow, bottle conditioned. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (toasted grain), lightly to moderately hoppy (herbs), lightly to moderately yeasty (barnyard, cobwebs), with notes of gum, lemon zest, pepper, band aid, alcohol. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, watery/velvety texture, lively carbonation, moderately alcoholic. This is a straight-up Victory Helios clone (with more alcohol), although itís more than 3x as expensive. Is it 3x as good? Well, no, but itís certainly a decent Belgian strong golden ale. Like Helios, itís not really a saison (certainly not a "classic" saison, as this brewer seems to contend...they might want to do a bit more research on that), but if you want to call this a "super saison" I guess you can do that. Itís a Belgian strong golden (with Brett), and for that itís quite pleasant...the aroma is nice and very Helios-like. Plastic-like, as with íMerica, but itís a bit more integrated and band-aid-like here, perhaps thanks to the Brett. The high alcohol is of course unwelcome, but thatís really the primary gripe. If they made a 5-6% version of this, I might be able to get on board with Krebs (oops, sorry...Prairie), but sadly that probably wonít happen. An enjoyable brew, but since itís so expensive relative to quality I canít imagine ever buying it again. Ten bucks for a single 500mL bottle brewed only one state away, and Dupont is nine bucks for 750mL of much better beer all the way from Belgium. Why???

Bottle, shared with Parksy and Grippitis. Cloudy yellow body topped by a dense creamy head that clings to my glass. Beautiful balance between bready, soft malts and zesty Saaz hops and peppery spicy yeast. Full-flavoured but danegrously drinkable, an excellent saison.
