Prairie Gold is a dry, highly effervescent saison fermented with a mix of ale yeast, wine yeast, lactobacillus and 2 strains of brettanomyces. This beer highlights the various yeasts and bacteria used to make it. Lemon, pear, white wine grapes, and a touch of funk dominate the flavor and aroma in this champagne like beer.

Tasted on 9/21/13 from a corked and caged 750mL bottle purchased at Louisville Beer Store. Pours cloudy yellow with a massive, foamy perfectly white head that slowly recedes to thin, bubbly lace. The nose is dry and funky, almost Champagne-like yeastiness with a touch of tart lemon pith, and a bit of a wheaty malt aroma. The flavor is very similar, with a tart, yet very lightly sweet preserved lemon, a bit more of a biscuity flavor than suggested on the nose, and plenty of dry, funky yeast. The body is fairly light with sparkling carbonation and a very long, faintly sweet, but very tart preserved lemon finish.

Thanks to Jon for the bottle share. Pours a hazy yellow with a one-finger soapy white head that dissipates fairly quickly. Lots of barnyard and musty hay aromas with some lemon zest and light pear in the background. Active carbonation with a light body. Light tart finish, crisp and refreshing. Fairly one-dimensional but a winner.

Gusher. Slightly cloudy gold (surprise!). Nose of yeast, white wine barrel dregs. Dry, high minerality, with some grapefruit pith. Drying, chalky minerality on a short finish.

This was poured into a tulip. The appearance was a hazy pale grapefruit color with a quickly dissipating slim foamy head. There was barely any lacing. The smell starts with a sour and bitter grapefruit rind, bold lemon pulp and rind - a light sweetness from the lemon rolls in to blend in with some light grape-like vinous-ness. Luckily, that part maintains a nice background. The taste was a moderately sweet to sour balance in the grapefruit and lemon rind. A quick dry grapefruit pith aftertaste runs into the finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light on the body with a moderate ability of balancing between a sipping and sessionable sour drying feel on my tongue. Overall, this was a pretty nice sour ale that I’m pretty sure I’d have again.
