Pours a deep rusty umber color with two fingers of thick khaki foam that laces nicely. The nose is rustic old oak, vanilla, burnt sugar and traces of vinous fruit and a touch of cardboard. The palate follows with a complex array of flavors that all fall in place nicely. Hints of plum, burnt sugar, pine needles, nougat, coffee, orange peel, sour cherry... damn this thing is packed with intricate flavors that are like a massively complex oxidized old ale ! Digging It.

On tap at Grape and Grain, San Mateo, Calf, pours a dark muddy amber brown with no head. Nose is hoppy and yeasty with some bubblegum. Taste is yeasty and a bit sour . Finish is a bit tart as well with a moderate lingering. Quaff Score 7 / 10

Bottle from craftshack. Pours a solid dark brown bordering on black with a decent sized off white head that shows great retention. Aromas of caramel and brown sugar, a hint of oak and higher spirits, a bit of papery oxidation, and a light lactic cherry fruitiness. Light chocolate comes out especially as she warms. The flavor is sweet and dark sugary up front. Alcohol, tart cherries, tobacco, and chocolate fly in midway through. Finishes with a lingering caramel and fruity tartness. Medium body with a light to moderate level of carbonation and a sugary but somewhat tart mouthfeel. Decent brew I enjoyed it.

500 ml bottle poured a hazy reddish brown with a lasting amber head. Aromas of toffee, cocoa, fruitiness, oak, caramel and light, vanilla. Palate was light to medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of toffee, oak and dried fruit with a smooth lingering toffee finish.

Pours dark brown, shaded with magenta. Opaque. Probably cloudy but it’s too dark to really tell. Small light beige head. Decent lacing, retention for a beer of this strength. Stewed berries, cocoa, brown sugar and apricots in the nose. I think there’s some barrel presence, but it’s kinda hard to tell what’s what. Possibly some spirit and oak knocking around. It smells like sugar cookies, fruitcake and rum (that’s more a function of the alcohol and fruitiness, rather than any sort of guess at the barrels used). The taste also has lots of fruit and heavy sweetness. A tad medicinal. Some definite booze. Light chocolate. Berries and apricots soaked in caramel, wine and booze. Thick feel. Never gets too sticky, though. Interesting stuff. Definitely more legitimately old ale-ish than I expected, which is fun. It’s not a barleywine, and there’s a whole bunch of stuff going on. Good for a cold winter night, but this beer might catch some off-guard.

Bottle at The Trappist, Oakland. Colour is dark brown with small slightly brownish white head. Aromas and flavours. Dark fruits, wood, some sweetness, hints of tartness and berries. Quite weird, texture has some elements of red wine. This one needs some aging to get softer. Can’t find any alcohol like some have.

16.9 oz bottle to snifter (shared with the Mrs.). Looks good; a no plaque dark amberish brown with light beige lacing. Smells sweet and boozy with notes of oak and dark fruit. Tastes like it smells with a somewhat tart mouthfeel. A little earthy and vinous as well. Solid beer, but could be more balanced and viscous. Will probably improve with age, as it’s a little hot right now.

Dark brown, cola like pour, with a off-white/lightly tan head.. which dissipated to a very thin film that lingers throughout glass. Served in a Duvel tulip glass at cool room temp. Delicate aromas of chocolate, rum raisin, dark dried fruit, plum skins, and vanilla, with hints of coffee grounds. Mouthfeel is noticeably creamy and full with fine carbonation, yet medium weight overall. Dry and mouthwatering on the palate, though not "sour" or tart as others have claimed. Flavors of dried dark fruit skins, bakers chocolate, tobacco, light dusty cinnamon, and subtle, bitter coffee elegantly linger on the palate. Alcohol seems balanced with flavors, if not helping intensify/drive the flavors. I must admit, the abv feels higher then 10%.. My eyes are heavy... Unsure where this will go with age.. varied reviews worry me. I'd suggest drinking this beer sooner than later this holiday season. --- tasted while on a long journey to understand the world around me...
