Pours a very hazy mahogany color with a small but well retained head.

The aroma is rich, sweet but not overly so... itís got some light tootsie roll chocolate notes, some caramel, a good bit of vanilla & oak... itís lightly earthy. It hitís a lot of the notes I like in big Barleywines &/or Old Ales.

The flavor is fairly boozy, I had heard it was not, but it has a sort of brandy like booziness to it, not that this is bad at all. The beer has a touch of tartness & is not as sweet as the aroma lets on. Some layers of tobacco, toffee, & raisin are there. Itís all pretty darn oaky, like real real oaky.

Neat

500mL bottle, pours a deep dark brown with an amber tinge and a fairly large beige head. Nose is classic old ale, with roasted English malts, wood, and a hint of dry toffee. Flavour brings out some licorice, wood, a strange slightly tart roasted malt and unmistakeable English malt quality. Carbonation is unusually and unnecessarily high, but it fortunately doesnít detract too much from the fairly elegant mouthfeel. Unusual and seemingly a bit infected, but still okay.

Bottle. Pours dark brown with creamy tan head. Nose and taste of oak, candied fruit, cinnamon, brown sugar, alcohol soaked dark fruits, raisin, fig and boozy cherries. Medium body. A bit hot.

Bottle. Pours dark brown with minimal head. Aroma of chocolate and cherries. Taste follows the nose with a bit of a boozy after taste. Another solid offering from PAA.

The appearance has a dark brown close to black colored body with a two and a half fingered white foamy head that lasts for a good two minutes before gently dieing and leaving some nice foamy lacing sticking finely to the sides of the glass. The smell has a funky sort of tart/somewhat sour cherries, plums, raisins and apples that combine and giving off a decent spicy/somewhat peppery sort tone. There is a nice oakiness that comes in as it warms, also there is a nice roastiness of sorts to add to it. The taste starts off as a funky sort of tart/sour, but more so becomes mostly subdued with a gentle leading sweet oakiness coming forth as the beer warms. There is a nice soothing caramel/molassess aftertaste and a long sweet sticky dry finish. On the palate, she sits about a medium to heavy on the body, not exactly sessionable - more of a sipper but at 10% and most likely brewed in late 2013, Iím expecting it to be more of a sipper. Carbonation is fairly smooth and this is good for the old ale style and for me. Overall, this is one of the heavier old ales Iíve had. Iím glad I tried it - if anything. I would say everything seems to fit right for the style and for me as its mostly balanced.

Bottle via trade. Nose of wood and vanilla. A slightly boozey note as well. Moderate chocolate. A slight peppery phenol character too. Taste has an initially slightly tart character that is cherry like, almost like a Flanders but subtle. Chocokate is moderate to low in flavor. A medium light mouthfeel. Slightly chewy and raisiny. Overall am interesting old ale but not one I would necessarily buy a lot of or seek out.

Bottle share thanks to Homer321. pours a very dark, nearly black color. Big chocolate aroma up front, followed by some oaky barrel and vanilla character...mild booze and dark fruit. Taste is dark fruit, some sweetness and mild tartness near the back. Slight metallic character. Roastiness follows.

At Jupiter during Sour Sunday 2014. Hazy brownish with a medium head. A bit on the sweet side with dark fruit, cookies, caramel and some very light spicy notes. Also some notes of oak. Balanced and with a full mouthfeel. Some warming alcohol in the finish.
