SubstanceT (1087), Saint Louis, Missouri, USA Jan 21, 2007 #994, on tap at the brewery in Schaumburg Illinois. Dark dark brown nearly black, clear with a medium sized brown head that is quickly discipating. Nose is rather malty and thin. Taste is more full with a lot of grains and malt. I must say that this is rather decieveing when it comes to alcohol. After one of these I was feeling it, the waitress noted that it was 8.5% alcohol. From the feeling I agree. Cornfield (4255), Oak Lawn, Illinois, USA Dec 31, 2006 This poured a deep reddish brown body with a bubbly ecru head. The aroma is faint, lightly roasted malts with dirty dark caramel and a suggestion of dark fruit. Medium-bodied, it’s got more of a roasted flavor than the sweetness that I’d expect in a doppelbock and has a meager hop bitterness approaching the finish. Drinakable.

scraff (1629), Baltimore, Maryland, USA Dec 14, 2005 Growler at A&K 4th DC tasting - Deep amberish brown, thin white creamy head. Nose held notes of toast, buttery caramel, raisin, and plum. Malty sweet flavors up front with a light hop bitterness late. Light to medium bodied, soft carbonation, semi-sweet finish. More German hops would have done this right.... The_Beer_God (2827), Newport News, Virginia, USA Dec 11, 2005 From a growler at Aaron and Kathy’s Holiday/YeHa Party on 12-3-05. Courtesy of argo0. Body is ruby.copper with a small whitish head. Nose is malty and sweet but with some graininess and light caramel. Taste is sweet and caramelly. Light alcohol as well. Dark fruits, brown sugar, hint of toffee, toasted malts, and maraschino cherry. Body is lighter than expected. Finishes with more sweet malts, caramel and brown sugar. A bit too sweet at times, but still pretty good. jasonp (1440), Sterling/Dulles, Virginia, USA Dec 8, 2005 Sampled at Argo and Kathy’s ’05 Holiday Gathering. Clear dark copper with an off-white head. Kilned malts and some wood in the nose. Tastes pretty sweet with notes of caramel, plum, raisin, brown sugar, wood, smoke and some hops. Medium thinnish body with subtle carbonation. Overall, solid but it needed more body.
