4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Unsure where this came from- back of the fridge. 330ml bottle. Mahogany with an unmoving, finger-width head. Depending on your fingers. Seriously enticing aroma awash with caramel sauce-draped fig, malt loaf, ripe plum, muscovado and balsamic splashes. A bit Playdoh and vanilla Muller Light. HP sauce and chocolate-coated raisin taste; sweet dried fruit, vanilla pod, Bertie Bassett, molasses without stickiness. Alcohol brilliantly concealed. All about sugar, with a pinch of Belgian devilry thrown in. What a wickedly drinkable little bottle of treasure.

4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
During a trip to Brugge in Dec 2011 I had two 33 cl bottles of this brew, the first in t’Brugs Beertje and the second in De Bierboom: this review is of the second bottle, Daisy’s place being too busy to review in.
The original receipt comes from ‘De Vliegende Paard Brouwers’ (Oedelem) but is now brewed by De Proefbrouwerij (Lochristi). Anyway the beer poured a very dark brown colour (almost black) with some ruby hints when held up to the light. The head was a well constructed foam covering of beige coloured bubbles.
In the nose, dark chocolate, caramel and fruit cake: theses being the big three in an aroma of great magnitude and complexity.
The taste was also very complex, with flavours coming at you from all angles: malty, chocolate, toffee, coffee, mixed dried fruits (raisins, oranges, etc, etc), pepper and wintery spices. It had a mini-bitter hop edge towards the end of each sip too!
Even though it sounds (from the smells and taste description I’ve given) rich, heavy and full bodied it isn’t: it’s fairly thin for such a complicated beer, not watery but certainly not creamy or rich in any way. The alcohol content is well hidden and sits nicely within the whole experience of drinking this brew.
