A decent quad, not the most interesting however. Pours a bright ruby red with a thick white head, looks more like a fruit beer. Smells of molasses and a bit of booziness. Taste is strangely smooth and basic. Lots of caramel and molasses, with a bit of booziness int he finish. Had on tap at the Trappist.

Light brown and slightly murky with a thin tan head. Dark fruit, plums, raisins, & figs on the nose. Tastes of fruitcake and caramel. Slick mouth feel. A nice quad.

Idiosynkrasie (4081) - Bielefeld, GERMANY - SEP 29, 2014
330ml bottle. Murky, dark brown colour with average, frothy, half-way lasting, moderately lacing, off-white to beige head. Vinous, fruity aroma, notes of dark fruit, raisin, black cherries, blue grapes, a touch of chocolate and pumpernickel, hints of fruit parings. Taste is moderately sweet malty, bready, dark flan case, a touch of chocolate and pumpernickel, notes of dark fruit, dark berries, raisin; lasting dry finish with hints of fruit parings, aditionally some warming alcohol. Rich and complex, still very (dangerously) drinkable.

Bottle from the Elm Tree, Cambridge. Plum-chocolate brown, hazy with a thin but respectable khaki head. Plums, raisins, currants & figs in the aroma. Milk chocolate. Freshly rolled cigars. A bit of pure alcohol astringency. Lovely but doesn’t quite hang together. Sweet fruitcake and caramel is quickly interrupted by a shocking bitterness. At first it jars but I grow to appreciate the balance over the course of the bottle. Notes of treacle tart and hazelnut abound. Full and luscious body, with exhilarating carbonation. Finish and aftertaste are a bit too bitter compared to what has come before. Very good, but would struggle to compete with the best quads.

Vliegende Paard’s first creation, made at the ’Proef’brouwerij. Light beige, moussy, quickly dissipating head, colour a dark burgundy, misty; aroma of fondant chocolate, dates, bayleaf, caramelized chicory, coffee powder, whisky, liquorice, sherry. Deep candied fruity and malty taste, full, rich and smooth, bit resinous palate, bitterish finish with aromatic hops, roasted malts and warming alcohol which was just a little bit too strong for me. I’d call this an abt rather than a quadrupel too. Still, great beer, especially for a first one.

750mL bottle. Poured rich, reddish-brown with a very tall, sticky beige head. The aroma picked up airy detergent, white pepper, cloves, and grape zest over fruity and biscuity malts.. the detergent was weird and kind of got in the way. The flavor found molasses and darker fruity notes at the core with cloves, peppery notes, and a bit of detergent around (and throughout).. tacky and spicy on the warm finish. Heavier-bodied with lots of carbonation.. sharp at times and a bit messy.

Brown color, minimal tan head. Aroma of caramel, fig, wood. Taste is a bit sweet but far less than expected, mostly bitter, with notes of dark chocolate, black coffee. Smoky and earthy finish with lasting dryness and bitterness (a bit too much). Overall a good quad.

0.33L bottle. Pours very dark red-brown with a thick, frothy tan head that lingers. Nice aroma profile: chocolate, roasted malt, alcohol, some balsamic vinegar. Initial yeasty bitterness quickly gives way to a medium-strong sweetness with fruity notes (plum and raisin). Transitions to a long, roasted malt and herby hop linger that balances off the sweetness. Full body with a creamy mouthfeel and mild carbonation. Overall, a decent profile on this beer, considering the alcohol content. Decent aromas, well-balanced, and good mouthfeel.
