09.01.13. Bottle. Large, light brown foam. Very dark, clear amber color. Aroma of some coffee and caramel, chocolate, buttery, sweet, maybe some cinnamon. Overall nice aroma. Taste is bitter, some coffee, alcohol. Smooth mouthfeel, pretty long bitter aftertaste.

Overall, nice aroma but otherwise average. I was told this is noticeably different from the original beer the competition winner submitted and won with.

Earthy, fruity with a hint of nasty aroma. Pours a murky dark brown with a really thick foamy tan head. Roasted malt and a hint of coffee and cocoa. Dry finish. More like a stout than a quad. Not bad but I won’t be getting any more.

33cl bottle. APPEARANCE: dark brown beer, small unstable beige head. NOSE: burned malts, little smoked, coffee, chocolate, some caramel. TASTE: lots of burned malts, something ’green’ afterwards, liquorice, long lasting coffee taste, somewhat bitter. Very heavy to drink... Good beer, but not my kind of thing...

33cl Bottle from De Hopduvel, Gent. Dark brown colour, beige head. Aroma of sweet dark malts, dark fruits, yeast, a bit of cellar, almost vinous. Resembles St. Bernardus a bit imho. Flavour is medium-sweet, quite malty, chocolate, dark fruits, raisin and grape, toast, firm hoppy and light roasted bitter finish, bordering on herbal. Medium to full-bodied, soft mouthfeel. Tasty.

Bottle sampled in Exira, IA. Thanks to adnielsen for sharing. Pours a dark brown color with off white head. Malty, dark fruit flavors. Some metallic flavors.

Bottle @ Exira Beer Summit IV. Pours a cloudy, reddish brown appearance with a light brown head. Candy sugar, plum, caramel, chocolate, dark grape aroma. Nutmeg/cinnamon-like spiciness in the flavor. Chocolate, brown sugar, dark fruity, date flavor. Definitely a different take on a Quad but pretty tasty.

I had a hard time finding anything on this beer online. It seems to be new to Ratebeer, and I’ve certainly never heard of it. But I’ll not often turn down a quad. So... sounds good to me! So dark brown/red in color that it almost looks black, it has a thin, off white head that leaves more foam on the glass than atop the beer. Although fruity in the nose, it’s different from your every day quad, with cherries and plums dominating. I know, that doesn’t sound so new. But it is very different. It’s more flavor than sweet, with a high alcohol and crystallized malt sweetness sticking around in the finish. Strange, eh? Sweetness only shows up in the finish... leaving your palate to spend most of its time enjoying the flavors for all they’re worth without the obstruction of residual sweetness. Classy, smooth, like sinking your teeth into a fermented plum. That about sums it up. You know the alcohol has to be high, but it’s kind to you. It’s a respecting beer, and because of its professionalism also deserves some respect, too.

Bottled@HBF2013. Brown hazy colour with a small beigeish brown head. Aroma is caramel, fruits, ripe fruits, alcohol and some mild yeasty and toffeeish notes. Flavour is quite similar, but with stronger notes of the sweet malts and also quite syrupy notes.

Bottle at home. Dark brown to black pour, thin tan head. Aroma has some ripe fruits, bready yeast, licorice, candy sugar, spices and some peppers. Flavor is quite bitter, long lingering, sweet fruity, spicy and quite intense. Nice balance and thick body. Decent brew.
