Bottle conditioned; Regular Foraged Herb Hefeweisse. A pale and hazy wheat beer with pronounced herbal notes, this beer has hints of clove, citrus, and banana. Conceived as a perfect match to classic roast chicken, Wu Gang will also go nicely with spicy food. Low in alcohol but with plenty of flavour, this one is a perfect thirst-quencher on a summer’s day.

330ml bottle from Borough Wines. Very interesting taste indeed, and aroma actually. Hard to place what it is. Fresh herbs, coriander, mint, rosehip, flora, nettle, pot pourri... ok, but not sure I’d go for another.

Sampled from a bottle from Prohibition Wines. Yellow colour with a white head. Slightly sour and herbal aroma, and a taste of sage, apple, cloves and banana. Quite herbaceous and slightly medicinal. Very tasty (despite the low ABV) and refreshing. An interesting beer, not quite like anything else I have tried.

Bottle, served in Paradise Garage as part of their food/drink pairing. I like this brewery quite a lot but had always passed on this despite it’s good London availability. I just wouldn’t normally want to drink some weird herbal wheat beer. And I was right, it is very unusual with very strong botanical notes over and above the weizen notes which do lurk in the background, clove and apple, and would be pretty odd in a pub, say. But it was amazing with the appetiser/amuse bouche type courses with the herbal notes really going well with the savoury snacks. So in that case as a beer for food it is a roaring success. No idea then how to rate it...

Bottle at Spoons, Shepherds Bush. 26/08/16. Sweet yeasty aroma. A hint of herbs or my imagination? A slightly hazy gold. Light bodied. Dry. Slightly chalky. Sour - has an odd element to it, which again’ll be the herbs. Nice enough. But kinda medicinal.

Tried this at the Rochester Castle in Stoke Newington. This blurb on the beer describes as having been made with foraged herbs, and true to form, it smells overwhelmingly of sage, with a sulphurous undercurrent, which put me mind of sausages, unexpected, and if I’m honest, not that pleasant. Flavour upon tasting was better than smell, though very herbal. The usual notes present in Hefeweizens seemed to be obscured by this, and it was drier that most of that beer genre usually are. An interesting experiment in beermaking, but not an unmitigaged success or one I’d eagerly revisit.

Bottle at the Ledbury, 5/29/16. Murky yellow, with a white head. Some spice, lemon, and wheat. Pretty solid flavor overall. Drinks nicely for the style, just a solid overall effort.

Keg at The Hop Inn, Newcastle-Under-Lyme. A hazy golden colour with a thin white head. Aroma of pepper, wheat, some lemon, slight banana, a little apple and herbal hops. Taste of lemon, lime, wheat, some wheat, a little banana and clove plus slight herbal hops. Light bodied and moderate carbonation. A short, citrusy hop bitterness in the finish. Don’t know what I think about this, unappealing aroma of pepper and herbs but a nice flavour of citrus and subtle classic Hefeweisse tones. So so.

Bottle from Ales By Mail. Pours hazy golden with a very big fluffy white head. Aroma of herbal hops with cloves. Taste is weak sweet, wheat with a long herbal finish, strange brew.
