Our winter seasonal beer, Babayaga is a 7% export-strength woodland stout. We smoked some malt with rosemary, and added a few other embellishments. This beer is inspired by Eastern European folklore, by woodland, streams, cold dark nights and woodsmoke. This was brewed at Westport, MA by Dann and Martha with help from our friends Adam and Br. Brian. The mash contained over 4,000 lb of malt (the biggest beer we’ve done) and there were also rye, oats and wheat in the grist. Fermented with a mix of English and Belgian yeast strains.

[7932-20151114] Tap. Mild roasted grains aroma. Black body with a medium-lasting foamy tan head. Bitter burnt roasty wood flavour. Medium-full body is a little boozy. Interesting. (7/3/7/4/14) 3.5

2015-11-14. Black body with a modest tan head. 3+ Aroma of tangy fruit and roast, light coffee and cocoa notes. Flavour is similar, tangy fruit, lightly herbaceous spice character. Average plus bodied palate, good carbonation. Solid, but not entirely what I was in the mood for. 7/4/7/4/16 On tap at Deep Ellum, Boston.

I left some in the glass as tribute to what may be my last pretty things rating. RiP! Roast and some light caramel. Pours black with good head and lacing. Light bitter finish with touch of sour mash.

A deep dark stout with a thin mocha head. In aroma, beautiful fruity chocolate malt with cherry blossom, alcohol, licorice notes, very nice. In mouth, a smooth sweet fruity chocolate malt with light floral hops, dark fruits, peated notes, creamy character, very nice. 2011 edition. OttBottShare March 2014.

Bottle at home with my dad. Pour is deep brown, almost black with a big frothy brown head and great lacing. Roasty, cocoa, coffee, earthy, light vanilla, toffee, and caramelly aroma. Taste is big roast, sweet vanilla, dirt, espresso, toasted bread, light grass, and caramel. Slick mouthfeel with SPF carbonation. Easy drinking stout. Solid stuff.

Bottle, VINTAGE 2011. Pretty close to black with a large creamy light brown head. Charcoal, cocoa, fruity bubblegum yeast notes, wood, dark dried fruits. Full body, creamy/sticky texture, medium carbonation, medium sweet and bitter, very light acidic. Light bitter and dry finish with lingering burnt notes. Solid stout, but a bit too yeasty for my taste. Cool label, learned a bit about Slavic folklore while drinking this.
