COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Baby tree is a "quadruple" brewed with a single strain of Belgian yeast. While a commonly used style name on the internet, "quadruple" isnít in fact a style name at all but a brand of beer produced by La Trappe in the Netherlands. Its found a common usage as a cover-all for the darkest and strongest beers produced by Trappist monks, mainly because they havenít named them themselves. Two Belgian brewers use the term "Abt", Flemish for "Abbot". Historically the best beer made in an abbey (by the Cistercians/Trappists at least) was referred to in Latin simply as "prima melior". This has also become a brand name in recent years. Our "quadruple" benefits from the addition of 40lbs of dried California plums in the kettle - hopefully contributing to the overall dark-fruit character of the beer. Itís a dark, 8.6% beer..."Baby Tree" is Pretty Thingsí first seasonal beer.

Brewed and bottled by Dann Paquette of Pretty Things Beer and Ale Project, Inc. at Buzzards Bay. Previously brewed at Paper City. Not a Paper City or Buzzards Bay brand beer.

This was bottled 5 months ago so itís pretty fresh. The pour is a dark brownish-deep amber color with a good initial fluffy tan head. The aroma has the expected Belgian yeast and candi sugars, some clove, raisins, and dates. Thereís some sugary spice flavors at first that give way to dark fruit, yeast, and some rumcake. The flavors pretty much fall in line with the aroma but the body is richer than I thought it would be with plenty of malty sweetness. Pretty impressive. As the case with most American Quads, this does fall short of some of the better Belgians but thatís no knock. This is a damn fine beer.

Gosh darn, gol dang Europeans havenít got anything better to do than to drink íourí beer and make their nice comments about it, dag nab it! By gum, this here beer is brewed in Somerville, Massachusetts by red-blooded Americans! I wouldnít put it in the same class as the various Belgian Trappistes, but it is an impressive offering from the Somervillians, or perhaps the Somer-villains, I was never sure in all the years I lived there. Iím proud of you lads. If the Euros like it, itís probably pretty damn good!
