A Brown Lager. The lager, yes lager, started out as an idea to create a very rustic beer with a roasted character and a brown disposition. We imagined a pre-Great War sort of beer that might have been on its last legs of popularity. The kind of beer young folks of the time would laugh about as being “an old man’s laberbier”. Well Pretty Things is the old man’s dream beer brewer, so we thought we’d give it a whirl! We started with malted barley and hops from the German tradition and employed a single decoction mash. Decoction is a slightly complicated, time intensive and little used technique (on this continent anyway) that insured temperature certainty in the age before real temperature control. Got it? Okay, that was a boring explanation. How is this: we took a portion of the mash and boiled it at 212 for 15 minutes. Trust us, boiling a mash is rare. Dann has only done this once in his twenty year career (on purpose anyway). Ahem. Watching a mash boil is a bit like watching a house burn down – it’s goes against you instinct and it appears that all is a loss. Thankfully that’s not the case. Fermentation lasted quite a long time at temperatures as low as 52 degrees Fahrenheit and then a continued lagering was applied afterwards. Total time in the tanks? How about 55 days? That’s a pretty respectable lager, with the yeast continuing to do their thing well into the new year.

Bomber poured a clear reddish brown with a small lasting tan head. Aromas of carmel, cocoa, graininess, dark fruit and light earthiness. Palate was light bodied and smooth with a dry finish. Flavors of carmel, cocoa, earthiness and light fruittiness with a smooth dry lingering carmel finish.

Draught at Taphouse. Dark brown colored with a medium sized off-white head. Sweet and malty aroma of caramel, bread and dried fruits. Light roasted flavor of caramel and licorice with notes of bread. Light roasted finish.

Sample@Taphouse, Copenhagen - brown pour with a reddish hue. Aroma and taste is sweet bready toasty malty, some light roasty notes, some toffee and caramel sweetness, some nutty nuances, pretty decent overall.

Draft. A deep red beer with a huge tan head. The aroma has notes of malt, caramel, and bread. The flavor is sweet with notes of bread, caramel, and malt, leading to a dry roasted finish.

This is a solid beer. Full flavoured with caramel, toast, spice, sharp bitterness, boozy hints, and a great bittersweet finish. Pleasantly surprised with this one.

Draft at iTap-Soulard, served in a pint glass. Pours a cloudy chestnut brown with an inch of beige head that laces the glass and settles into a film. Notes of chocolate, toasted barley and wheat, nuts, earth, caramel, dry grains, and leaves. Medium-bodied, with low to moderate carbonation and a toasty, earthy, smooth mouthfeel that finishes dry. Really good, interesting take on the style.

Bottle. Sweet and funky aroma of brown sugar, plums starting to spoil, vegetal rhubarb, and garden soil. Murky dark brown pour with a even khaki head, and fairly thick, uniform lacing. An odd taste that’s sweet at first (with brown sugar and raisins) before a dark sourness reminiscent of tart overripe stone fruit takes over along with heavy yeasty esters, a touch of balsamic vinegar, and a sharp anise flavor that fades quickly. This one is not really my thing.

Pours deep brown with a large tan head. The aroma has rich toast, roasted hazelnuts, spicy hops and a nice melding with the nuttiness being the biggest aspect. It has a medium body with a bit of smoothness and some frothy sharp carbonation. The taste starts with very heavy toast with a hint of coffee, nutty notes, earthy hops and some spiciness. The finish is earthy, grainy and a bit rough. Quite nice, but seemed more like a good brown ale than a lager.

You had me at Dunkle Bock!!!!!!! brew. They are doing good things with the brown, and more... Very happy to have a brewery brewing beer styleS, not style (IPA), and doing it very well. Super nice lager -- nose is roasted malt with hints of chocolate and bread. taste is only very slightly bitter with the malt taking over very soon. A pretty full body to this brown lager and a clean, satisfying finish.

bottle thanks to bytemesis. totally forgot I had this. nose is full of rich, roasted malt with light chocolate and bread. taste is initially bitter, almost burnt with a smokey note. almost like a bacon aspect to it. Not really sure if that is what they were going for here. It kinda works, but I don’t think that was intentional. pretty puzzled about what to drop on this beer. if you told me it was a smoked doppelbock, I’d be all over it.
