COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Mild was a hugely popular style for more than a century (1800-1900s). Here, we have released two mild ales side-by-side.: two beers from opposite ends of that period, brewed by the same brewery. If you drink both, you will drink the same brand from the same brewery separated by 107 years. Over those years, Mild changed considerably: something these beers amply demonstrate. Though bearing the same name, X Ale, in character they could hardly be more dissimilar. By WWII, Mild was firmly established as Britain’s most popular style of beer, but the years had not been kind. The war years in particular had taken their toll on Mild, reducing its alcohol content. There had been other changes too. For example, the colour, 1945 X Ale was much darker, brewed from a blend of 5 malts and dark brewing sugar. Wartime shortages also dictated the use of flaked barley. This 1945 Mild contained just a fifth of the hops of 1838 version. This is Mild as we know it today: a low-gravity, lightly-hopped, dark beer. Drink the two side-by-side to see these changes in action.

22 oz bottle poured into a pub pint glass. Pours and orangish brown tea color. Reasonably clear with a small white head. A little over carbed for style, but not terribly so. Smells of grain and caramel. Tastes spicy, grainy, nutty, slightly grassy with some fruity undertones. Medium bodied with a medium dry finish. Nice sessionable mild, very much what I expect from Mild today.

22 ounce bottle. Pours a darker brown with a thin, beige head of foam. Aroma is roasty, bready, and chocolatey. Tastes like a burnt biscuit covered in chocolate powder. Nice!

Thanks to Max for sharing. 655 ml. bottle sampled. Very interesting concept that greatly interests me, although it is quite impossible to be honest. Drank side by side with the 1838 as suggested. 1945 was unanimously found to be the better & more flavourful one which is staggering considering the fact that this one is 2.8 ABV & 1838 was 7.4 ABV. The body on this was actually at least as full, maybe even fuller. Pour a dark amber, clear, little white head. Smell is cacao, light herbs, sweet caramel, dark malts & mellow chocolate. Taste is sweet caramel, toffee, cacao, malts, light herbs, chocolate, yeast, light metallic side,… Not a shocker but doing quite well given the presumable advanced aged & low ABV. Body is light but nowhere near too light. Still feels far too American for me.

Bomber courtesy of and shared with Man Ki and 77ships. Cuivre, col beige moyen.

Pours amber brown with a medium tan head. Aroma is earthy, caramel and hay/grass. Taste is mild bitters with a hint of hops. Drank well and is a great example of the style, ratings should be higher!

22oz bottle. Pours a dark copper color with an off white head and a little bit of lacing. Aroma is nutty, bready, toast, caramel. Medium on the palate with soft carbonation. Flavor is sweet, light, bready, nutty, a little grassy, with a smooth, nutty finish. Very tasty at 2.8%.

Pours amber hazy with a beautiful creamy tan head. The aroma brings some subtle pleasant sweet malts and wheat notes. The flavor is mild, so just right for the style. It brings sweet wheat and malt notes as well that are just refreshing on a sunny spring day. There are some light hop bitter and earthy notes at the end.

In short: A full body toasted amber light ale. Surprisingly satisfying 2.8% beer. Excellent.
How: Bottle 22oz, consumed a few weeks after purchase.
The look: Medium-cloudy amber body topped by a large rocky beige head leaving lots of lacing on the glass.
In long: Nose is pleasantly toasted, roasted tree bark, leafy hops, birch tree, more… a very inviting aroma that was more intense than expected given the size of this beer. Taste has nice toasted grainy malts boosting a nice freshness sensation, crusty bread, caramel, notes of peaches, tree bark, leafy hops, iced-tea, dry tree leafs. Not much bitterness. Fluffy yeast coming through and creating a rather full cushiony mouthfeel with big soft bubbles. Never watery this 2.8% beer feels rather full body. Certainly one of the best (if not the best) Mild Ale I’ve had from a bottle. Not sure why they named this beer February 22nd 1945 but this is the date Uruguay declared war on Germany and Japan (I shit you not, check it out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1945) and thus creating the one and only day of WWII peace because both the Axis and Allies were rolling on the floor laughing.

First off, this is a pretty cool series of brews that the folks at Pretty Things are doing. Aroma is light caramel and toffee, some faint molasses, and a synthetic aroma. Pour is dark brown, with a thin head. Soft carbonation around tons of toffee flavor and a lasting aftertaste. Very nice and full flavored for such a low ABV. Impressive.

This was a pretty potent brew for such a light abv. The aroma was like musty water, toffee and dank hops. Overall it tasted the same, but with a more rich toffee finish that lingered.... and lingered... impressive! Thanks to OmegaX for the share.

Bottle. Chocolate malt, light roast coffee, and barley aroma. Clear copper with a large off-white head. Roasty malt, light coffee flavor with a light roasty bitter finish. Medium body, low carbonation.
