Once Upon a Time Series #1: Once upon a time, on Monday February 27th, 1832, a brewer stepped into the Black Eagle brewhouse, Brick Lane, London, and brewed a beer that confounds expectations many years later. A mild ale at 10% alcohol, with more hops than most modern American “India Pale Ales.

A hazed rosey amber ale with a thin off white head. In aroma, sweet caramel malt with corn syrup, citrus, loads of alcohol, doughy notes. In mouth, a smooth malt bomb with nice grassy hops, treacle, nice and smooth. Tasted with GRM, Probstblueribbon and Ian, July 20 2012.

Hazy orange pour, creamy white head. Bready malts, light hops, crackers, caramel, toffee. Flavor is smooth, very light malt and hops. Nothing offensive at all.

UPDATED: JUL 1, 2010 Bottle… Tally Tasting ‘10… Mostly clear, dirty orange ale with a small, creamy, white head. Decent retention. The nose offers notes of pale bready malts and herbal, medicinal, fruity hops... with a buttery hint of diacetyl. Medium to full-bodied with fizzy carbonation. Malty and sweet, but balanced well by medium bitterness. Finishes bittersweet, and then dry. Thanks to fata2683 for sharing the bottle!

Bottle shared by Kyle, thanks! Poured a cloudy light brown with a gray head that dissipated to the edges. Aroma had notes of sweet grain with some spice and a hint of hops. Flavor was sweeter with lots of bread, cereal and grain with a bit of nuttiness.

Bottle from Craft. Pours chill hazy copper with off-white head. Nose is caramel malt, fusel spirits, hops, pepper. Tastes rich, malty, spirity, with spare hops and a rich flavor. This one is anything but mild. and if they were drinking this stuff back in 1832, then they were awesome. Gets hotter as it warms, and lightweights need go back to Bud Chelada.

Bottle at the Shenandoah Throwdown. Pours a mostly clear brownish orange with a medium sized white head. Caramel and a light hop presence, very subtle and refined. Sweet caramel and plums, soft fruit. The alcohol is mostly hidden on here, though it does peek through a couple of times. Sweet lightly bitter finish. Imperial mild? Not sure about that, but whatever it was, sure was tasty.

Courtesy of bvc. Pours clear copper with thin white head. The aroma is fruity esters, phenol chemicals and then nose searing heat. The taste is very sweet to start with malts and some dark fruity esters. It then gets a punctuated from time to time by a chemical booziness. A mild ale, really?

Sample from bottle at RBWG. Pours a hazy amber color with a small creamy whitish head. The aroma was sweet malt, caramel, floral with hints of fruit. The flavor was pretty big for what it is; sweet caramel malts, fruits, somewhat bready, mild herbal bitterness. Interesting.

6/26/10. Sampled at the Tally Tasting 2010 courtesy fata2683. Bubblegum aroma, the flavor is huuuge sweet with bubblegum. Strange.
