Once Upon a Time Series #1: Once upon a time, on Monday February 27th, 1832, a brewer stepped into the Black Eagle brewhouse, Brick Lane, London, and brewed a beer that confounds expectations many years later. A mild ale at 10% alcohol, with more hops than most modern American “India Pale Ales.

22oz bottle. I had no idea what to expect from this beer. Pours a strange orange color with a foamy off-white head. Aroma is of caramel, smoke, wheat, fruit, and spice. It’s hard to describe the aroma, but it definitely does not smell bad. Taste is of caramel, wheat, assorted fruit, and spice. Has a very dry malt backbone. There is definitely a good amount of smoke in this beer. Lingering taste of spice. As it warms, some pineapple starts to come through strongly. The alcohol is present, but not overpowering. This beer is hard to describe, but I enjoyed it.

Bottle. Poured into a tulip glass. Pours a slightly opaque reddish orange color with a nice 1 finger white tan head that slowly settles and leaves lace on the glass as it does. More malty smelling than hoppy but there is a slight citrus type ara in the nose. Hmmm, the taste is sweet and malty with hints of caramel with a slight hip kick in the back end. The malt dominates this beer though basically throughout the entire drink of this beer. Decently so-so drinkable but not outstanding. Minimal lace. Medium mouthfeel. Boozy finish.

Hazy orange pour, creamy white head. Bready malts, light hops, crackers, caramel, toffee. Flavor is smooth, very light malt and hops. Nothing offensive at all.

Tons of phenols in the nose, some darker fruit notes - raisins. Almost smells like a malt liquor. Sweet and adjuncty with alcohol. Pours darker golden, no head or lace. Lots of sweetness upfront - sugars, appley plum notes. Toast and even a hint of leather? Tons of adjuncty sweetness wow. So to make a mild 10percen you add a shit ton of fermentable sugars. Mouth burning alcohol. Light but sweet, thin bit hot. Wow, an odd beer.
