Once upon a time, on Friday, November 15th, 1901, an Edwardian brewer stepped into a London brewhouse and brewed a beer that confounds expectations many years later. An ale darker than most Porters that uses more hops than a modern IPA. Thanks once again to the talents of brewing historian, Ron Pattinson, we can reproduce this moment in time from the original brewday document. This ‘KK’ beer is brewed with several pale malts, brown malt, caramelized brewing sugars and two classic English hop varieties, Bramling Cross and Kent Goldings. O.G. 1.075, 7.8% ABV.

Aroma has exotic, ripe fruits, some berries and vanilla. Like smelling a raspberry quark. Flavour is a bit messy with hops, raspberries, bilberries and vanilla. Very complex, unique and good!

It’s black with a creamy, light brown head and the aroma has notes of spruce, citrus and licorice. The flavor has a light/moderate sweetness and notes of hard roasted malt, hops, spruce, citrus, licorice, chocolate and a little salt. The finish is bitter and slightly dry.

Pours murky brown color with small head. Aroma of sour, almost acidic fruits and berries, malts and hops. Flavor of sour berries like bilberry and raspberry, malts and fruits. Very obscure mesh of different styles. Unique, but definitely in a good way.

A pitch black colored beer, with a dark beige head. The aroma of dark malts, some liquorice juice, a lttle flowery. The taste is moving from some bitter to strong hop bitter, roasted malts, coffee notes with dark fruits. The aftertaste is strong bitter with notes of roasted malt.

Bottle. Pours black with a tan head. Smells of dark malts, grassy hops, mellow honey. Tastes roasted, with a medium bitter, and a small sweetness. Finishes dry and slightly bitter. Medium bodied. Reminds me of Struise Outblack, but with some additional porter qualities.
