COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Mild was a hugely popular style for more than a century (1800-1900s). Here, we have released two mild ales side-by-side.: two beers from opposite ends of that period, brewed by the same brewery. If you drink both, you will drink the same brand from the same brewery separated by 107 years. Over those years, Mild changed considerably: something these beers amply demonstrate. Though bearing the same name, X Ale, in character they could hardly be more dissimilar. The 1830s saw the beginning of a boom in Mild ale brewing, which in 30 years became England’s favourite beer. This beer, 1838 X Ale is a typical London Mild of the era: bigger and more robustly hopped than modern versions. Brewed from 100% pale malt and Kent hops, this is a straightforward, uncomplicated beer, much like the working classes who first drank it. The colour is also much paler than you might expect. From this original form, Mild was to undergo many transformations, culminating in the second beer in this series, February 22nd, 1945. Drink them side-by-side to compare how this beer style evolved.

Bomber courtesy of and shared with Man Ki and 77 ships.

22oz bottle 9/28/13 (Hy-Vee Cedar Rapids)-Pours a slightly hazy golden with a white head. Aroma of grains, citrus, and malt. Taste of the same with some grass. This light to medium bodied brew was quite tasty.

It poured a light hazy yellow color with a small white head. The aroma was of toasty maltiness with herbal hops and a bit of fruitiness. There were more hops in the taste, with grassy and bitters through the finish and a bready, toasty malt body. Good stuff.

Bottle. Clear deep golden color, small white head. Aroma of citrus, raw bread. Taste is sweet citrus and caramel. Totally different than its cousins, each a fascinating piece of history.

Very hazy orange beer, little white head. Palate is soft and a little dry. Dry creamy malt. Mile minerals. Good balance of pithy orange hop bitterness. Even more creamy malt and a trace of banana ester. Fairly astringent finish. Interesting!

650ml bottle. Hazy orangey golden colour with small, creamy, half-way lasting, moderately lacing, white head. Hoppy aroma with a touch of mint, pale malty basis with biscuit touch. Taste is minimally sweet pale malty with a biscuit touch, floral hoppy overtones with an orange note and hints of mint, almost peppery in the finish. As the description says: "[...] this is a straightforward, uncomplicated beer, [...] much paler than you might expect". Exactly: no knick-knack, simply tasty, quaffable, good - and, by the way, the palest Mild Ale for me so far. Thank you for reviving this recipe - cool stuff.

Bottle. Medium sized off-white head with some beige sits on a hazy pale orange body. Some bits of lacing as the head fades to a film after a few minutes. Nose is sweet orange, grain, yeasty fruit, remnants of floral hops and alcohol. Taste is medium sweet and medium bitter. Flavors of lightly sweet malt are quickly surpassed by strong herbal and lemon pith bitterness. Medium body. Finishes both sweet and bitter. Not what I expected at all from my limited knowledge of modern milds.

Bottle. Pours hazy butterscotch with a small white head that dissipates quickly with good lacing. Aroma is citrus, corn, grain, hay. Flavor is the same, medium sweet, light grassy bitter. Bit of corn syrup. Bitterness increases with drinking. Surprisingly full bodied with a creamy mouthfeel. Interesting beer, very interesting series idea.
