3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 bluevegie (3004) - Perth, AUSTRALIA - OCT 25, 2008
Sometimes you sit down and relax and then really enjoy a beer, well, I didn’t sit down and relax instead I had a big row with the missus, bu I did enjoy this beer. Dark coppery red body with a large off-white head. Couldn’t quite nail the aroma although it did have some pepper and a little dusty. Smooth taste, malt driven with a touch of spice and caramel.

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 jonno (1994) - JAPAN - JUL 17, 2010
Maybe I missed something but this didn’t go down well at all. Quite alcoholic without giving too much back in flavour. I referred to this a like rubbing alcohol and unfortunately that’s a very apt description.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 hawthorne00 (1853) - Melbourne, AUSTRALIA - MAR 20, 2010
Pours copper with a lovely creamy beige head. Lots of tiny bubbles. Smells of toffee, balsamic vinegar, orchards and the barnyard. Tastes sweet with a real hard toffee character. There are candy-shop spices too - ginger, mace, cinnamon, anise. Enough sourness to balance. I guess this is from 2008, but it’s hard to tell. A pleasant surprise.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 davidm (1772) - Melbourne, AUSTRALIA - MAR 11, 2012
Bottle from Dispensary Enoteca. Great, malty beer. Aromas of nuts and caramel. Taste is sweet, with light bitterness, and long length. Palate is velvety, with a medium-to-full body. Amber, with a frothy head.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Stew41 (1569) - Woodend, AUSTRALIA - APR 3, 2010
Otway’s best beer? Probably, and a contender for Australia’s leading BdG. Lots of punch with a big malty, slightly roasted palate that is Belgian-ale esque. Some spice but not as much as the style would typically have. Tastes stronger than is sb 7% abv. Good beer.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Davros (1473) - Melbourne, AUSTRALIA - AUG 30, 2011
Pours dark amber/ruby with a large head.
Nose shows nutty malt and lemon notes. Pretty faint, not much going on.
Similar nutty notes as a flavour right through to the finish. Also some solvent-like alcohol and hints of pear.
Nice moderate carbonation, body seems slightly watery though.
The nutty malt is lovely, but other than that this is somewhat plain.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 bluebetty (1019) - AUSTRALIA - NOV 24, 2010
Bottle thanks to Dlau. Pours a dark brown with smallish tan coloured head. Aromas of sweet malt, some stone fruit and a touch of alcohol. Not too bad. Flavours are pretty much the same. Biscuity malt and some alcohol. Probably the best of their beers that I have had.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20 Muggus69 (885) - Newcastle, NSW, AUSTRALIA - NOV 30, 2011
750mL skittle Champagne bottle
Ruby body, bit of haze, supports a sizeable fluffy white head.
Subdued aroma. Caramel, toasty/biscuity malts, hint of woody and earthy spices, some faint red fruit esters.
Carbonation is quite low, medium bodied.
Nice sweet malts on the body, good bit of caramel, biscuit and toasted nuts. Fruity esters with some nice cherry and raspberry undertones. Low bitterness on finish, hint of spice lingers.
Not a style i’ve come across much of, so it’s hard to know how to compare it. Certainly enjoy the malt character and sublties about the overall character of the beer. Spose a bit more carbonation would be nice to give it some texture, but it’s not bad overall.
