König Ludwig Weissbier Dunkel. Bottled 0,50L. Dark orange color, nearly brown and much hazy with a modest bubbly aspect. Foamy head of long resistance. Much acidulous scent, notes of banana, lemon, cellar, white mildew and white grape acinus. Realy excessively sour taste, very tart with a very lively and crisp body. Unbalanced crisp final.

50 cl. bottle as Konig Ludwig Weissbier Dunkel @ my parents in law, drank this together with my father in law. Brown with a beige head. Aroma of roasted malts. Quite thin mouthfeel but otherwise a fairly decent dunkelweizen.

(Note: this beer is sold under the name "Konig Ludwig Weissbier Dunkel" in Hong Kong)

Try this with my friends at a local German resturant on the evening of 28-Dec-2012. Served in tall weizen glass. Near black colour with minimal white head and almost no carbonation and sediments, looks like Coca Cola without CO2; Faint smell of vanilla and caramel; Watery body with light sweet taste, trace of roast malt with light sour finish. No hop taste or bitterness whatsoever.

Comments: I was kind of looking forward to Konig Ludwig’s weiss / dunkel as I had several German wheat beers with gave me a generally good impression on this beer type, but I am totally disappointed by this brand. The good ones like Paulaner, Franziskaner, and Erdinger have good colours and foams, medium to full body with pleasant taste. This dunkel, has a body so thin, a look so underwhelming, and a taste so bland as if I was drinking a mildly-flavored Coke Zero. Avoid it at all cost.

UPDATED: JAN 13, 2013 Reviewed from notes. I had this on tap in a german restaurant. Hazy colour, that of honey or Long Island Iced Tea cocktail. @ finger foam which lasted for quite long. Few bubbles rising to the top. Aroma is of fruits, mostly bananas. Taste is only a bit bitter and fruity. Medium thin in body. Decent one.

#604 Kupferfarben, wenig trüb im Glas. Verhaltenes Aroma, eher nichtssagend. Test vom 11.1.2007 Noten: 10,9,10,9,10,9 - 9,30

Nice sweet dunks taste. Not as sweet as Franziskaner but very good. Much better than the same brewery’s original weizen.

Bottle from Kris Wines. A brown-orange colour, with a dense head and high carbonation from the bottle, definitely looks the part. Aroma is yeasty and wheaty. Dunkelweizen is quite an ephemeral style, at its best (especially in dunkelweizenbock form) it can be one of the most complex beers imaginable, but often the dark malt seems to dampen some of the wheat character without really imposing its own malty footprint. This was slightly the case with this one, which came out quite yeasty, smooth drinking but perhaps not the more full flavoured or complex beer out there.
