Based on a 200-year-old recipe for Porter, a brew whose popularity changed English beer-making methods in the mid-1750s. A dark full-flavoured beer but smoother and less bitter than stout. Made with softened water, Propeller London Porter is a blend of pale, roasted and chocolate malts, hopped with English and North American varieties.

Dark brown with a thick tan head and good lacing on the glass. Very nice appearance. One of the better ones I’ve seen for a porter. Light coffee and some mocha chocolate. Very smooth body and a light malty finish. Excellent beer.

Poured from bottle. Great aroma of chocolate and coffee. Pours black. Has a light bitter taste. Medium body, oily texture, and a mild bitter finish. A really nice smooth porter.

This is a very fine Porter. Coffee, cocoa, toasted malts, caramel and earth tickle the nose hairs with every sniff. Right before things go opaque, this beer halts its Lovibondage and tops it off with a sexy tan head. Great bittersweet classic English taste here, a very lightly oily body with mid carbonation. Pick up a six’er if you can.

Bottle from the brewery Pours a solid dark brown with ruby highlights and a smallish off white head that dissipates rather quickly. Aromas of roasted grain, toffee, caramel and hints of earthy. The flavor follows the aroma quite well. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation. Decent porter, I prefer them a bit more robust, but this one is tasty.

Noir avec une mousse moyenne marron. L’arôme du chocolat et malt torréfié. Le goût est pareille et équilibré avec un peu d’amertume.

Deep brown with a big pill owing head. Smoky malt, chocolate and molasses in the nose. Lots of smooth chocolate, creamy smoky roasty malt. Very nice classic porter

650 ml bottle. Pours black with full whitish head. Aromas of burnt malts, hay, and light coffee. Flavors of heavily roasted malts, bitter unsweetened chocolate, and ash. Very dry. Just the way I expect a Porter is supposed to be - no confusion with a stout on this one.

Dark brown with a gigantic, rocky tan head. The aroma has a lot of chocolate. Flavor is roasted malt with some nice chocolate. Super high carbonation and medium mouthfeel.

Large bottle from Liquor Barn in Burnaby Heights. A very dark beer with a hint of ruby translucence near the bottom of stemmed glass. Not as black as coal, but getting there. A generous tan head and sweet malts on the nose.

Wow, they really got the flavors balanced right on this one! First impression is of chocolate and roasted malts with a hint of coffee. Sweet, but not too sweet. Just right. Very smooth, mellow and satisfying!

Oakes, if you read this, I thoroughly enjoyed your reminiscences of Halifax, though I’ve never been there. Cheers!

UPDATED: JUN 28, 2013 From a 341 ml bottle into a pint glass (alas the by-and-large disappearance of the bomber....) Roasty aroma with a definitely noticeable coffee tinge. Pours a deep brown with a lasting light tan peripheral head. Rich and malty flavour with chocolate and coffee overtones. Delightful. One of my favourites.
