3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
500 ml bottle purchased at the LCBO on Rideau and King Edward (Ottawa) on March 1, 2013. Black, medium head. Sweet coffee aroma, hints of berries. The taste is dry, a little coffee, but more alcohol, sour aftertaste. Not much of a revolution here!

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
500ml bottle. Pours a dark, dark brown with a small mocha coloured head. The nose is surprising. A lot of dried fruit, raisins, dates, figs, with molasses, caramel, alcohol and a note that makes me think "spiced Christmas ale". As for taste, itís medium bodied, and on the sweeter side of things. Starts sweet with the dried fruit notes, and opens up to a big hit of molasses, with almost a pumpkin spice undertone, wood notes, cocoa, and some very evident alcohol, followed by some mild bitterness in the finish. I like it. I would definitely buy it again.

Pours a silky black with a small dark brown head. Aroma is deep roasted malts, bitter chocolate. Taste is smooth, nice body with roasted malts, some coffee and bitter chocolate. Easy drinking for an impy.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Well... it looks delicious poured from a 500ml bottle. Great frothy brown head. Taste is extremely earthy, almost gritty, and then transitions abruptly into bit of bitter malt. I donít know the last time I had a RIS this gritty. Maybe it needed to sit for a while?

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
500 mL bottle. I wasnít as impressed by this one as I wanted to be. There is nothing wrong with it; it has all the requisites of appearance, nose, and taste for a RIS. But there is nothing in particular to make it stand out in a crowded field either. There is nothing markedly better that is regularly available at the LC, though, so Iíll probably get a couple more.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Rich, toasty a bit boozy. A tad watery and light in the mouth. Small head and a deep, deep burnt umber / brown. A very decent brew, but missing a richness. A bit too dry for my tastes.

2 finger head bubble brown, black beer can see a small amount of carbination if I look up close. Smell is chocolate, booze?,coffee?,hops? Taste is mainly chocolate but some sips have a rostedness and a bitter hop bit a little that can be sourish at times. Canít taste the % but can terll itís a stronger beer. heavy bodied. I like stouts and this is good but not the best one I had. Cheerís!!!

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
(500mL bottle from the LC) Pours black with a tiny tan head, little lace. Nose has molasses, roast coffee, dark chocolate, fig, bit of anise lingering behind. Flavour sweet up front, chocolate malts with moderate toast, coffee with sugar, fades into black licorice, bit of wood and then dry green, almost menthol hops with roast at the finish, a little "fresh" at the end. Palate is thinner for the style, with carb that is soft but prickly, and the alcohol is buried. Not a bad RIS, but not quite there.
