COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This beer was born for greatness. Sent by English brewers via the Baltic Sea to the court of the Czars, Russian Imperial Stout was brewed to very high gravities and allowed to ferment on the long voyage. The result? A dark, strong and bracing brew, imbibed by Peter, adored by Catherine and now reclaimed by you, the People. Za Vas!

500 mL bottle from the brewery, served in a snifter. Pours hazy dark chestnut with a tiny, rocky tan head. The head quickly fades to a bare cover and leaves a small amount of fine lace. The nose has notes of sweet, roasted malts, molasses, chocolate, licorice, herbs and a hint of pine. The flavour starts out moderately sweet with a strong roasted quality and a touch of whisky. A moderate bitterness is soon added to the mix, with a piney, citrusy quality. The finish is long and bitter with peppery alcohol notes. On the palate, it is full in body with a thick, creamy texture and soft carbonation. Overall, this is a decent imperial stout with a surprising hoppy character. The Cascade hops bring to mind a black IPA, but this is a much deeper and heavier brew. 2011-03-04

500mL bottle, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma of smoked malt, with some light chocolate and vanilla notes. The flavour reveals this smoked malt upfront, with some breadiness, a little iodine but not dominating, with even subtler chocolate. Quite nice, though subpar for impy stout.

500ml bottle from 16th St. Liquor in West Vancouver. Pours a murky black with thin khaki head. Aroma is smoky malt with some hop notes. Flavour is lusciously thick with smoky malt, sharp hop bite, some iodine, breadiness. Some licorice. Finish is nicely lingering.

Well balanced head with aromas of caramel, coffee and maybe some chocolate. Light hops to balance. Exremely dark pour, medium froth. Heavy bitter taste that is pleasant, with very light sweet undertones. More carbonation than I expected, but it works with this beer. The finish is long, and bitter. This is a fantastic beer, top notch.

Jet black beer with a tan head. Smells of dark chocolate and coffee aroma. Coffee and chocolate come through in taste as well as roasted malts. Nice slightly bitter finish. Nice beer.

341 ml bottle. A nice big imp stout. Pours black in colour, with decent tan head. Aroma and taste are firstly chocolate, with decent balance of coffee and a little bit of alchohol peeking out. Good!

Chocolate and coffee aromas dominate, with a bit of resiny hops. Appearance is nearly black with a surprisingly frothy tan head. Slightly sweet (might be better in a few months) and a bit bitter. Not-quite-full body and creamy mouth feel. Lively carbonation for a stout with a bitter finish. Not my favorite imperial stout, but worth drinking on a cold Halifax night.

Maybe not the most distinctive I’ve ever had but pretty damn good, Got a growler fresh from the brewery so my opinion may be biased on debauchery.
