4.8 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Amazing brew. Excellent lacing with tiny cascading bubbles; a true beaute to watch. And the mouthfeel is nice and thick in the bitter finish especially, like a wine loaded with tannins. But it all starts with the aroma with this one. One of the best i smelled in a while. Maple first with cocoa second and buttered rum close behind. Nice and roasty as well. Especially in the taste; roasty with bitter astringency, yet mellowed by a classic, natural old school sweetness. Think molasses, butterscotch; not the shite kind, but the old fashioned homemade pure stuff.
PS: I noticed the fall season in Ontario developed a unified surge of pumpkin beer all the way. Now in the winter, it’s imperial stouts. And it’s much better! And so far this my fave.

500ml bottle into a pint glass. Pours a deep black with a light tan head. Hefty roasty malt aroma overwhelms, with a hint of coffee and a bit of tire. Sweet maltiness with some coffee and dried fruits. Dry and sticky on the palate. Very warming and enjoyable.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Very, very dark brown, almost black, with a khaki head. Heavy on the roasted malt aromas with some dark fruit, licorice, and coffee. Dark chocolate, burnt sugar, and a hint of molasses. The flavor is a touch bitter, but has a lot of sweetness from the burnt sugar, licorice, and molasses. Big roasted malt and coffee, some dark chocolate, and a touch of alcohol.

his beer was born for greatness. Sent by English brewers via the Baltic Sea to the court of the Czars, Russian Imperial Stout was brewed to very high gravities and allowed to ferment on the long voyage. The result? A dark, strong and bracing brew, imbibed by Peter, adored by Catherine and now reclaimed by you, the People. Za Vas!

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
500 ml bottle purchased at the LCBO on Rideau and King Edward (Ottawa) on March 1, 2013. Black, medium head. Sweet coffee aroma, hints of berries. The taste is dry, a little coffee, but more alcohol, sour aftertaste. Not much of a revolution here!

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
500ml bottle. Pours a dark, dark brown with a small mocha coloured head. The nose is surprising. A lot of dried fruit, raisins, dates, figs, with molasses, caramel, alcohol and a note that makes me think "spiced Christmas ale". As for taste, it’s medium bodied, and on the sweeter side of things. Starts sweet with the dried fruit notes, and opens up to a big hit of molasses, with almost a pumpkin spice undertone, wood notes, cocoa, and some very evident alcohol, followed by some mild bitterness in the finish. I like it. I would definitely buy it again.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Well... it looks delicious poured from a 500ml bottle. Great frothy brown head. Taste is extremely earthy, almost gritty, and then transitions abruptly into bit of bitter malt. I don’t know the last time I had a RIS this gritty. Maybe it needed to sit for a while?

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
500 mL bottle. I wasn’t as impressed by this one as I wanted to be. There is nothing wrong with it; it has all the requisites of appearance, nose, and taste for a RIS. But there is nothing in particular to make it stand out in a crowded field either. There is nothing markedly better that is regularly available at the LC, though, so I’ll probably get a couple more.
