Bottle shared with my father in law on Fathers Day. A near-gusher, the beer foamed out of the neck slowly. Hazy auburn body. Lightly phenolic and herbal aroma and flavour, no squash and no spice, just yeast and soft dark malts. Odd, but not undrinkable.

Pours dark amber with a thick pillowy head. Aroma is potpourri, celery & spices. Taste is very herbal (rosemary, celery, oregano), creamy and smooth. It’s slightly sour with a long biscuit-like finish. Truely unique.

A very soft pour still ends up with four-fingers of tan colored froth that threatens to overflow my glass if I don’t quickly eat some foam; as the head slowly subsides it leaves a nice, layered lacing on the sides of my glass. The beer is a dark, roasted-amber color that shows a lightly hazed, madly carbonated, amber hue with gold highlights when held up to the light. The aroma smells sweet, fruity, spicy, a touch herbal / woody, and with an earthy quality to it. This last seems wrapped up in the darker malt notes, perhaps some caramelized squash character, and there is a nice nuttiness here as well. Toasted pepita notes, nutmeg, soft but sweet anise, a dark fruitiness that reminds me of something like raisins, caramelized dark squash-custard aromas, and a toasted, whole grain maltiness are all noticeable here in the nose. The spices, especially nutmeg notes are definitely the dominant notes in the aroma. As the beer warms up the nose starts to become a bit more savory somehow, as opposed to being sweet and desert like, it really opens up the complexity quite a bit.
The beer is dry up front, with a touch of tartness to it through the middle, and a bit of an astringent finish. Lingering spice notes of nutmeg, anise, and even some ginger / pepper like spiciness lay on the palate after each sip. There is a soft caramelized character here that just barely suggests at a sweetness; in fact the spices that are so bright in the aroma are muted a fair amount here in the flavor because of this. Some roasted notes in the finish are joined by a nice browned whole grain nutty note, as well as a sort of fruitiness that I can only best describe as floral pumpkin; this last lingers on a bit in the finish too. The body is light and effervescent, with a prickly carbonic bite to it, yet there is some palate viscosity here as the beer has just a touch of heft to it such that this beer has a touch of chewiness to it.
Definitely a fitting beer for the season, even more so as my after dinner beer on Thanksgiving (which this is). A nice beer for sure, definitely a good example of a pumpkin beer fit for the colder season.

Bottle:   Dirty amber, dark, large foamy tannish head, fairly nice lacing.   Stronge sage and herbal notes on the nose.   Not sure what about this is Pumpkin?   A little hot on the tongue, sage, herbal notes, and very shrubby.   This is like a huge Mountain Farmhouse Ale.   New style perhaps?   Body and mouthfeel are moderate, also a little spritzy.   Sage on the nose, herbal shrubbiness on the tongue, but still void of anything I consider Pumpkin.   Very interesting and unique beer, a bit more than Farmhouse, and not subtle, but it doesn’t remind me of Autumn all that much.   Certainly unique tho!
