COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is a dark amber lager made in the world famous brewing area around Bamberg, Germany. They are characterized by their smooth malty flavor. The Franconian version differs from the dark lagers of Bavaria by being slightly stronger and drier. Dunkels have a distinctive malty flavor that comes from a special brewing technique called decoction mashing. We are reviving the Altfränkisches Dunkel Bier from the Hümmer Brauerei in Breitengüßbach, the brewery whose brewhouse now resides in Denver, Colorado at Prost Brewing.

Clear, dark brown pour with little head. Malty, dark caramel notes give way to distinct noble hop flavors. Finishes with some residual sweetness.

12 oz. bottle. Dark, amber brown, with a small, foamy, beige head. Aroma is dark bread, pumpernickel, light cloves, caramel, and a hint of sweet cherries. Sweet and malty, with a light, piney, hop kick. Light to medium body, a little chalky, syrupy, and a clingy, bitter aftertaste. This is a a surprisingly complex, aromatic, and tasty dunkel. Good maltiness and yeast character.

Very traditional. Flavors were bold and malty. Aroma was a little light but the flavor was biscuity and slightly dry and earthy. Soft brown color with a full body and nice head.

Slightly hazy brown with a thin head. Aroma is a bit funky...footy...touch toasty. Too footy, sewagey. Altfrankisch? Get over yourself.

Had on tap at Prost Brewery. Thinner than expected. Pretty much no aroma, but nice flavor. Not as full bodied as I hoped, but with a nice finish. Not a complex beer, but good tasting

Pours clear medium brown with a thin beige head, moderate retention. Aromas of toffee, biscuit, chocolate, grass. Medium-light body, smooth, lightly dry. Medium sweet, a hint of tartness, light bitter finish. The mouthfeel is a bit like a bock.
