4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pour on tap at the brewery, crisp clear orange yellow with fluffy white head, aroma brought notes of crisp and dry lemon peel, spice, cracker and buttered bread, but not in a diacetyl way, some nice honey, grass and floral notes come in as well. Taste is a nice mix of spicy grass and earthy hops, some dry cracker malts, some hints of honey and vanilla, finish very dry, spicy and refreshing. Very well crafted.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
UPDATED: SEP 17, 2012 sparkling clear pale gold with a white head and decent retention. hop aroma has the characteristic overt cheese must, baloney / fatty acids, and herbaceousness of overuse of noble hops with a small amount of acedylhyde / green apple aroma present, evident in the flavor as well, suggesting the beer may be too young. at times the nose even seems salty, and the mineral / calcium / sulfur content too high. by the end of the glass the strong vegetable and herbal character combined with egg shell sulfur notes seems directionless and random. the hop rate of German pilsner is typically lower than Bohemian style, to bring the beer into balance with the higher attenuation / lower sweetness. the hop rate here seems more appropriate for Czech pilsner, but the malt is far too dry to support it, and I have to guess the intent is to satisfy the hop desires of American palates. the result is bracing acidity and a coarse texture. add in the mild sulfuric acids and dried fruit esters and it comes across as a bit too unclean for pilsner; the acids from the yeast seem to accentuate the hop flavors much more than the malt, which is hidden behind the brash acidity and astringency of the bittering hops.
